I figured I would take a few moments to hop on here and discuss what we are seeing in office because EVERYONE is sick currently.
-Fever: fever is defined as a temp of 100.4 or greater. This is a medical emergency in children under three months of age. Take these babies to the ER! If older, fever is a common symptom of most pediatric illnesses and is usually not harmful. What’s the magic number you ask? There isn’t one. I worry more about a kiddo who’s 100.5, who is not eating or drinking well rather than the child who’s at 103 running around the house playing. Fever is our friend and helps us fight off pesky viruses that are so prevalent right now. You can treat a fever with Tylenol or Motrin (if older than 6 months of age) if your kiddo feels puny or is symptomatic. Fever lasting longer than five days is also definitely something I’d want to see you for.
- Flu B: Typically this is considered the milder of the 2 variations of flu, but it is hitting kiddos HARD! Lots of fever, diarrhea, body aches and fatigue. It’s important to keep kiddos hydrated during illness. One wet diaper every 6-8 hours! RED FLAG: If your kiddo does not want to put weight on their legs or will not walk, go to the ER. This is a rare but serious condition caused by Flu (and other viruses) called viral myositis or even Rhabdomyolysis.
- Diarrhea: Not fun at all, lasting anywhere from 3-5 days in most kiddos that I’m seeing. Red flag is blood in the stool. Push fluids and avoid sugary products or dairy.
- This is an INCREDIBLY busy time of year and will only get busier. Never hesitate to tell your MA,receptionist or provider that you appreciate them. These days are hard, and when we receive messages or calls from parents who are upset or yelling, most of us take it to heart. We of course want to see all of your children when they are sick, but we are only able to see so many to provide quality care. Please be kind and patient with us during this busy season.
