March is National Athletic Training Month, and this year’s theme is "Care You Can Count On."

We’re proud to recognize our athletic trainers, Nathan, Sarah, and Todd, for the care, support, and expertise they bring to athletes and patients in our communities.

Athletic trainers are healthcare professionals trained in injury prevention, emergency care, and rehabilitation, and they work closely with physicians and other members of the care team. Their role is essential in safety of our local student-athletes, and helping people stay active and healthy.

Thank you, Nathan, Sarah, and Todd, for the care you provide every day!

What a great night of learning, connection, and support at our 39th Annual EMS Night. Thank you to the first responders, EMTs, paramedics, ER nurses, EMS educators, and emergency personnel from fire and police departments who joined us in person and virtually for this valuable continuing education event.

We’re also grateful to our speakers for sharing their expertise, including Dr. Rachel Redig, Astera Health chief of staff, medical director of the Emergency Department, medical director of EMS, and member of our Board of Directors; and Molly Murch and Ryan Telford of Essentia Health. From case studies to stroke care and cardiovascular emergencies, this year’s program offered important insights for those serving on the front lines.

A special thank you to Karvonen Funeral & Cremation Service for helping host the event again this year.

Interested in serving your community? Consider training to become a volunteer first responder for your local department. These roles are always needed across our region and beyond. Keep an eye on our event page for future EMS education opportunities: https://hubs.la/Q046sF9T0

🌟 Help us celebrate one of our outstanding team members, Santa (aka our fearless Director of Facilities, Mike Johnson), our February recipient of the Star of Astera award! 🌟

Mike was nominated by Clare for going the extra mile to bring cheer to pediatric patients spending Christmas in the hospital. While his job is to maintain our facilities so our staff can provide top-notch care, he’s always willing to do whatever he can to support patients, their families, and our team!

The nomination: "During Christmas, we had two pediatric patients who were going to be spending the holiday in the hospital. As we all know, no child wants to be hospitalized on Christmas. Wanting to bring a little joy to their day, I reached out to Mike, knowing he owns a Santa suit and has played Santa before.

Mike came in on Christmas Eve, dressed as Santa, and brought Christmas magic to children who otherwise would not have experienced the joy of the holiday they had hoped for. He also took the time to visit the Emergency Room, where two additional pediatric patients were being seen, spreading even more holiday cheer.

Mike truly exemplified empathy, compassion, and innovation by leaving his home on a holiday to ensure that Christmas magic was not lost for children who needed it most. His selflessness made a lasting impact on our patients, families, and staff.

Thank you, Mike, for going above and beyond and for helping keep the spirit of Christmas alive when it mattered most. You are truly deserving of the Star of Astera."

Mike, thank you for continually going above and beyond for everyone who walks through the doors of Astera Health and bringing a little Christmas cheer when it was needed most. Your compassion and commitment to living our values is unmatched. Thank you!!! ❤️

Foundation Impact in Action

Thanks to the generosity of our Astera Health Foundation donors, our Imaging department recently received a new lead apron through a grant that is designed to protect staff from radiation during procedures.

But this isn’t just about safety, it’s also about comfort. Imaging procedures can feel intimidating, especially for patients who are already anxious. A fun, patterned apron helps soften the clinical environment, spark conversation, and create a small distraction that helps patients relax during their exam.

When patients feel more at ease, they tend to move less and feel more satisfied with their care, making a meaningful difference in their overall experience.

A Gift That Makes a Difference

We are so grateful to Ashley and her family for sharing their milk donation journey with the Minnesota Milk Bank for Babies through our Milk Depot drop location.

Ashley shared:

"I was a milk donor with my oldest son, and now am donating with our new son. My nephew was born a week after our oldest and used donor milk during his NICU stay which is how I found out donor milk existed. As an oversupplier, I thought it would be rewarding to donate my milk to NICU babies like my nephew and became a donor with the MN Milk Bank. The process is relatively simple and donating is a unique and rewarding experience. I was able to donate my milk to the milk bank, along with friends and families babies throughout my first breastfeeding journey.

Our newest son, Vince, was born in November. He was flown to the Fargo NICU, where he received donor milk as well. I was able to see both ends of the donation process and am grateful that our son was able to get donor milk in his first few days. Now, I am oversupplying again. I am honored to feed my son as well as donate to the milk bank and local babies.”

For mothers who are oversupplying, donating milk is a powerful way to support fragile and premature babies in need.

We got decked out in blue for Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month!

Today, our team showed their support by wearing blue to raise awareness about colorectal cancer and the importance of screening. Colorectal cancer is one of the most preventable cancers when caught early, and screening can save lives.

If you’re 45 or older (or have a family history), talk with your provider about when you should be screened. A simple conversation could make all the difference.
