Classic photo of the first lifeguards on Hawaii.
This is a picture of the members of the Hui Nalu Surfing Club from 1915 (Duke Kahanamoku is third from right in the back row). Its members would go on to be the first Lifeguards.
On this day in 1917 the Territory of Hawaii official established a life-saving patrol in Waikiki.
Act 201 of the sessions law states that Lifeguards “shall at all times keep a vigilant lookout for persons in danger of drowning, render all the assistance in their power to any such persons, and keep order in the section under their control.”
100 years later Ocean Safety Lifeguards continue this duty. Let’s wish Ocean Safety a Happy Birthday, and thank the Lifeguards. They put their lives at risk to save those in need. We are planing an event to celebrate this monumental occasion later this year. We will be updating you as information becomes available. Thank you, as always, for all of your support.
