Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center Providing Comprehensive Healthcare Services for West Oʻahu
Waianae I Nanakuli I Kapolei I Ewa I Waipahu

Serving the communities in West Oahu beginning in 1972, WCCHC will celebrate its 52th anniversary in 2024. From its start as a one-doctor office, the health center is the oldest of the fourteen community health centers in the state. WCCHC is a safety net for uninsured, medically underserved residents in West Oahu. Last year, supported by 150 of its medical providers, WCCHC served 35,000 individuals thru ~195,000 visits using a “patient-centered healthcare home” model of care that integrates primary care, behavioral health, dental care, diagnostic services, specialty care, and more. WCCHC’s service area on the Waianae Coast includes a main center and three satellite clinics, a vision clinic, and six school-based health centers. The expanded service area outside of the Waianae Coast includes three clinics located in Kapolei, Ewa, and Waipahu.

Today we honor the life and legacy of Colleen Hanabusa, a proud Waiʻanae resident and dedicated public servant whose leadership helped shape Hawaiʻi for decades.

Colleen served our state and community in many roles, including as Hawaiʻi State Senate President and as a member of the United States House of Representatives. Throughout her career, she remained connected to the people of the Waiʻanae Coast.

She was also a strong supporter of Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center and the mission of expanding access to healthcare for our community.

Our thoughts are with her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing and working with her.

Mahalo, Colleen Hanabusa, for your lifetime of service.

This week, we celebrate Dental Assistant Recognition Week (March 1-7, 2026), a time to recognize and mahalo the incredible work of our WCCHC dental assistants.

Our dental assistants play an important role in supporting oral health across our community. In our dental clinics, they work alongside our dentists and dental hygienists to help patients receive quality care in a welcoming and supportive environment. Their skill, teamwork, and commitment help strengthen the oral health services we provide to our West Oʻahu patients and families.

Mahalo to our dental assistants for your dedication to oral health and for the care, compassion, and aloha you bring to our patients every day.

Mahalo to Nathan Shinagawa at KHON2 News for covering the EMT – Leeward Coast Academy, now four weeks into its inaugural cohort at Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center.

This five-month training program, developed in partnership with Honolulu Emergency Medical Services, provides hands-on instruction and a paid work-study model for 12 Leeward Oʻahu residents. The program expands access to EMT training while strengthening the emergency response workforce serving our island.

We are proud to support initiatives that build healthcare career pathways and invest in the long-term health and safety of our community.

Mahalo to Hawaii News Now for covering the recent launch of the EMT – Leeward Coast Academy Welcome Event, hosted in partnership with the City and County of Honolulu Emergency Medical Services.

This new program brings EMT training directly to West Oʻahu, with classroom instruction and clinical experience rooted in our community. The first cohort of 12 students is already learning essential lifesaving skills while participating in a paid work-study model that creates a direct pathway into emergency medical services careers.

Investing in local workforce development strengthens families, strengthens healthcare systems, and strengthens the Waianae Coast.

On Friday, Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center (WCCHC) proudly hosted the welcome event for the first cohort of the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) – Leeward Coast Academy, marking a major milestone for West Oʻahu.

In partnership with the City & County of Honolulu and Honolulu Emergency Medical Services (EMS), this launch represents the first West Oʻahu-based EMT training program of its kind expanding local career pathways and strengthening emergency response capacity where it is needed most.

All 12 recruits are Leeward Oʻahu residents. For the first time, aspiring EMTs from West Oʻahu have a pathway that minimizes long commutes and makes training more accessible. By bringing this opportunity closer to home, the academy removes barriers and empowers residents to pursue meaningful careers in emergency medical services.

The five-month academy, which began February 2, delivers rigorous, hands-on emergency medical training. Recruits develop essential EMT skills from cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and trauma wound care to tourniquet application, bandaging, and critical patient assessment techniques such as monitoring blood pressure and oxygen levels. Instruction is taking place in WCCHC’s newly renovated training classroom and is managed in partnership with Ka ʻIke Ola, WCCHC’s Education and Training Program Department. Clinical rotations will take place in WCCHC’s Emergency Department and at partnering emergency departments on O'ahu.

This is a paid training program, with recruits employed by the City & County of Honolulu and receiving full city employee benefits. This includes salary, paid vacation, and sick leave while completing the academy. Upon successful completion, they will meet all requirements for licensure as an Emergency Medical Technician – Basic (EMT-B) in the State of Hawaiʻi and will be eligible to serve as EMTs for the City & County of Honolulu.

We were honored to welcome Mayor Rick Blangiardi, EMS leadership, and community partners as we celebrated this exciting new chapter together.

The Academy will conclude in the summer with a graduation ceremony.

WCCHC was honored to welcome the Maniilaq Association Board of Directors & Leadership Team to the Waiʻanae Coast.

Maniilaq serves 12 remote Alaska Native villages across 38,000 square miles in Northwest Alaska, providing culturally grounded health and social services to their communities.

We were grateful for the opportunity to share how we serve Native Hawaiian communities through integrated primary care, workforce development, and whole-person health.

When Indigenous-led health systems learn from one another, our communities grow stronger. Mahalo to Maniilaq Association for the visit and for the important work you do in the Arctic.

Our WCCHC Board of Directors & Leadership Team was proud to attend the 2026 National Association of Community Health Centers Policy & Issues Forum in Washington, D.C., joining health center leaders from across the country to advocate for the future of primary care.

As a part of the conference, they met with the state delegation: Senator Brian Schatz, Senator Mazie Hirono, Representative Ed Case, and Representative Jill Tokuda. As Community Health Centers celebrate 60 years of service nationwide, they discussed the importance of strengthening primary care, supporting the healthcare workforce, and ensuring access to care for West Oʻahu families.

Community Health Centers serve 1 in 7 Americans and remain one of the most cost-effective and impactful investments in healthcare. We are grateful for the opportunity to share the voice of our community directly with federal leaders and to help shape policies that improve health outcomes across Waiʻanae Coast. This included discussing changes coming to Medicine in 2027, supporting Native Hawaiian Health, expanding telehealth, and ensuring access to primary care.

During the meeting with Senator Hirono, Nicholas Hughey, Executive Vice President, was recognized formally for his 10 year of contributions to community health with a message of recognition.

Mahalo to our congressional delegation for taking the time to meet with us and for their continued partnership in advancing community health.
