Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center Providing Comprehensive Healthcare Services for West Oʻahu
Waianae I Nanakuli I Kapolei I Ewa I Waipahu

Serving the communities in West Oahu beginning in 1972, WCCHC will celebrate its 52th anniversary in 2024. From its start as a one-doctor office, the health center is the oldest of the fourteen community health centers in the state. WCCHC is a safety net for uninsured, medically underserved residents in West Oahu. Last year, supported by 150 of its medical providers, WCCHC served 35,000 individual

s thru ~195,000 visits using a “patient-centered healthcare home” model of care that integrates primary care, behavioral health, dental care, diagnostic services, specialty care, and more. WCCHC’s service area on the Waianae Coast includes a main center and three satellite clinics, a vision clinic, and six school-based health centers. The expanded service area outside of the Waianae Coast includes three clinics located in Kapolei, Ewa, and Waipahu.

UH Hilo BSN students were out at Magic Island last Saturday for the Hele for Autism Walk & Fun Fair.

Representing UH Hilo and WCCHC, they provided first aid, offered free blood pressure checks, shared information about careers in healthcare and the BSN program, and ran a small activity and game for keiki.

The event brought together organizations from across Oʻahu to share resources and support for individuals with autism and their ʻohana.

Mahalo to our students for being there and supporting the community.

As we close out this week, we want to recognize and celebrate our dedicated Health Information Professionals and Health Information Technology team during Health Information Professionals Week (April 20–24, 2026).

Every day, these teams help keep the foundation of healthcare running strong. Together, they ensure patient information is properly managed, organized, accurate, secure, and accessible, while maintaining the digital systems, tools, and technology infrastructure our providers rely on to deliver safe, timely, and high-quality care.

Their work includes managing patient records, processing records requests, maintaining documentation standards, supporting chart completion, scanning and indexing documents, safeguarding patient privacy, supporting accurate data practices, assisting with audits and reporting, and helping ensure regulatory compliance. They play an essential role in keeping health information complete, organized, secure, and available to those involved in patient care.

They also oversee and support our EHR/EMR system, maintain hardware and software functionality, manage upgrades, troubleshoot technical issues, provide user support, reset access, optimize workflows, strengthen connectivity across departments, support printers and devices, assist with training, and help information move efficiently throughout the organization so care teams can focus on serving patients.

We especially mahalo these teams as they have been working diligently to support the launch of the EPIC electronic health record system this summer by preparing teams, guiding workflow transitions, resolving issues, and helping ensure a smooth implementation across the organization.

Though much of their work happens behind the scenes, their contributions are felt every day across our health center. Mahalo to our Health Information Professionals and Health Information Technology teams for your dedication, professionalism, and care.

This week we celebrate Medical Laboratory Professionals Week (April 19–25, 2026)!

We extend our sincere mahalo to our laboratory partner, Diagnostic Laboratory Services (DLS) for the important role they play in patient care, public health, and the health of our community. We mahalo the DLS laboratory staff—including assistants, technicians, phlebotomists, medical technologists, and laboratory scientists—whose expertise is essential to diagnostic medicine.

Every day, laboratory professionals work behind the scenes to collect specimens, perform testing, analyze results, maintain quality standards, and ensure providers receive accurate and timely information to guide diagnoses and treatment decisions. Nationally, approximately 70% of medical decisions depend on laboratory test results, highlighting the critical impact of their work on patient care and safety. Our 24-hour Emergency Department would not be possible without their around-the-clock support.

This year’s fun and creative Lab Week theme, “Lab Story: To Infinity and Beyond For Our Patients,” inspired by Toy Story, celebrates the dedication of laboratory professionals across the country who go above and beyond each day in service to patients. We loved seeing the DLS team bring the theme to life by dressing up in Toy Story costumes with a special laboratory twist.

Mahalo to the staff of Diagnostic Laboratory Services for being outstanding partners and for the vital work you do each day to help care for our patients, support our providers, and keep our community healthy.

Today we celebrate Administrative Professionals Day (April 22) and proudly recognize Administrative Professionals Week (April 19 – 25, 2026).

We extend a sincere mahalo to all our administrative professionals for the essential role they play across our Health Center. At WCCHC, our administrative professionals include our executive assistants, administrative support teams, and many others who ensure our patients, providers, and departments are supported every step of the way.

To our dedicated admin professionals — mahalo for everything you do to help us provide comprehensive healthcare to the people of West Oahu. Your hard work, care, and professionalism are essential to the heart of our health center. Though much of what you do happens behind the scenes, your impact is felt throughout our entire organization and the community we serve.

Please join us in expressing gratitude to administrative professionals for all they do — today and every day.

In March, during a critical shift change, staff from our Emergency Department, Imaging, Security, and Environmental Services demonstrated exceptional teamwork, professionalism, and commitment to patient care as they responded to a sudden surge of patients, including a trauma case.

Teams worked seamlessly across departments going beyond the call of duty to ensure patient safety, continuity of care, and operational stability. Many remained beyond their scheduled shifts, while others voluntarily came in to assist. Their composure, clinical and technical expertise, and collaboration under pressure exemplify the highest standards of frontline healthcare delivery.

On March 24th, WCCHC leadership formally presented this team with a Commendation of Teamwork & Service Excellence. A sincere mahalo to our Emergency Department, Imaging, Security, and Environmental Services for the excellence they displayed in teamwork and service.

This past Friday, we proudly kicked off the celebration of a major milestone — 10 years of WCCHC’s School Based Health Centers (SBHCs). We gathered at Waianae Intermediate School, where it all began, alongside students, staff, school leaders, and community members to mark a decade of impact.

WCCHC’s School Based Health Centers bring healthcare directly to school campuses along Waianae Coast, making it easier for students to receive care when they need it most while reducing time away from the classroom. With signed parental consent, SBHCs provide a full range of services, including primary medical care, behavioral health, outreach, and prevention services.

Medical services include child wellness exams, sports physicals, treatment for acute illness and injuries, management of chronic conditions such as asthma and allergies, routine lab testing, immunizations, TB clearance, vision and hearing screenings, medication refills, and referrals. Behavioral health services include mental health screenings, individual counseling, crisis intervention, substance use prevention and treatment, and more.

By placing Nurse Practitioners and Clinical Psychologists directly on campuses through both physical and mobile SBHC clinics, WCCHC has built a model designed to support adolescent health, empower students to take an active role in their well-being, and help ensure every student arrives healthy, present, and ready to learn. This work also supports improved attendance — an ongoing priority across the Waianae Coast.

Since opening in 2016, WCCHC’s School Based Health Centers have expanded to serve six schools across the Waianae Coast: Waianae High School, Waianae Intermediate School, Waianae Elementary School, Kamaile Academy Public Charter School, Nanakuli High and Intermediate School, and Nanaikapono Elementary School.

Together, these centers have served 5,322 patients through more than 23,193 visits, providing medical, behavioral health, and outreach services.

This is just the beginning. We will be continuing our 10 Year SBHC celebration throughout this year. Follow our page for more information as it is announced.

This week, we recognize Patient Access Week (April 5–11, 2026) and the dedicated healthcare professionals who support patient access—through registration, scheduling, insurance verification, and serving as the first point of contact for our patients.

We mahalo our Scheduling Specialists, Telecommunications Specialists, Clinical Assistants, and many others who are often the first connection for those seeking medical care with us. Through each interaction, you help create a welcoming and supportive start to every patient’s journey.
