HEALTHWISE THURSDAY!

November is American Diabetes Month — a time to take action together, as a community.
More than 37 million Americans are living with diabetes. Together, we can conquer this disease.

Q: What are the early warning signs of type 2 diabetes?

A: Diabetes is a common health condition that affects thousands of people in Hawaii, but the early signs can be easy to miss. Type 2 diabetes, in particular, can come on gradually and cause mild symptoms that go unnoticed for months or even years.

With type 2 diabetes, your body has a harder time using insulin, the hormone that helps you absorb glucose, a blood sugar that gives you energy. As it progresses, glucose slowly builds up in your blood, causing symptoms.

Early signs and symptoms include:
- Unusual thirst and frequent urination
- Hunger and fatigue
- Dry mouth and itchy skin due to dehydration from increased urination
- Blurred vision
- Sores or cuts that are slow to heal
- Pain or numbness in the feet can also be a warning sign of nerve damage

You can be tested for diabetes with a simple blood test. Medical guidelines recommend getting regular screenings for diabetes, especially after age 45, or if you have other risk factors. And if you are noticing any signs or symptoms of diabetes, talk with your doctor about getting checked.

Happy Halloween from our Wound Care team at Maui Wound Care and Hyperbaric Therapy! They went down the rabbit hole and got decked out in whimsical Alice in Wonderland costumes. If you're venturing out tonight, please remember to stay safe. Keep these safety tips in mind so your little ghosts and goblins stay safe:

🎃 Pick costumes carefully: Wear bright or reflective costumes. Make sure masks have big eye holes and costumes fit well.
🎃 Pumpkin safety: Let kids draw spooky designs and scoop seeds, but leave the carving to adults.
🎃 Avoid a fiery fright: Use glow sticks or battery-operated candles instead of real flames in jack-o’-lanterns.
🎃 Promote pedestrian safety: Arm kids with flashlights or glow sticks and add reflective tape to costumes so drivers can spot them in the dark.
🎃 Inspect treats: Check all goodies before anyone digs in. Safety first, sugar rush second!

Have a spooktacular night full of thrills, chills, and zero spills! 👻🕸️

HEALTHWISE THURSDAY!

Q: I have a family history of breast cancer. Do general mammogram recommendations apply to me?

A: Mammograms are an important screening tool for breast cancer because they are able to catch cancers when they are smaller and more treatable. Unfortunately, about 1 in every 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime.

Having a strong family history of breast cancer, may mean that you have an increased risk of developing breast cancer yourself. Start by learning more about your family history. Ask your first degree relatives (parents, siblings, and children) as well as your extended family (grandparents, aunties and cousins). Don’t forget to include both your mother’s and father’s side of the family and be sure to ask about other cancers such as pancreas, uterine, ovarian and prostate cancer. It is important to find out what age your family member was diagnosed, if they had genetic testing and if they died of their cancer.

Other factors include genetic mutations (like BRCA1 or 2), prior abnormal breast biopsies and chest radiation before you were 30. Regular alcohol use (more than 1 drink/day), some hormone therapies and being overweight also increases your risk of developing breast cancer.

For women at an average risk, The American Cancer Society recommends starting yearly mammograms at age 40-45 with an option to extend to every other year at age 55. Women who are considered high risk for breast cancer need to start mammograms earlier, commonly around age 30.

Maui Health offers state-of-the-art mammogram technology, including the GE Selenia Dimensions 2D/3D Digital Mammography System which provides some of the highest quality images available in Hawai’i. Staying up to date with screening mammograms saves lives. Call 808-243-3012 to schedule your screening mammogram today!

Support Sensory Needs at Hale Makamae with a Simple Act of Giving ❤️

When Janet Morel’s daughter Dana moved into Hale Makamae at Kula Hospital, Maui’s only specialized care home for profoundly disabled individuals, she finally found the expert care and love she needed to thrive. Now, Hale Makamae is building a sensory room to help residents learn to regulate emotions, connect with others, and experience the world more fully.

You can help to make it happen. Donations will directly support the construction of this transformative space that will lift spirits and open new worlds to some of Maui's most vulnerable.
