HEALTHWISE THURSDAY!

February is American Heart Month to help raise awareness about cardiovascular disease ❤️

Q: My doctor told me I am in pre-heart failure. Does that mean heart failure is inevitable?

A: The good news is no – heart failure isn’t always inevitable. Being in pre-heart failure means there’s still a lot you can do to protect your heart and slow – or even stop – the progression toward heart failure.

For most people, heart failure doesn’t happen suddenly. It develops slowly over time, as other health problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or coronary artery disease put extra strain on the heart. Once damage to the heart muscle begins, it really can’t be reversed, but the process can often be controlled or slowed with the right care.

Pre-heart failure happens in two stages:
Stage A: You’re considered at risk for developing heart failure, but your heart is still working normally.

Stage B: This is pre-heart failure. Your heart may be starting to show early signs of damage on tests or scans, but you still don’t have any symptoms.

The goal in both stages is to protect your heart and prevent things from getting worse.

In Stage A, focusing on managing the conditions that put you at risk – like managing your blood sugar, staying active, and making heart-healthy choices – can make a big impact.

In Stage B, your doctor may also recommend medications to help protect your heart. In some cases, procedures or surgery might be needed to repair heart structures.

Even if your heart has already started to show some signs of strain, treatment can often keep it from progressing to full heart failure.

It’s also important to know that you can get expert care right here on Maui. Maui Health’s cardiology program features state-of-the-art equipment and a team of specialists dedicated to caring for your heart, without having to leave the island. To schedule an appointment, call the Maui Memorial Medical Center Outpatient Clinic at 808-442-5700.

February is American Heart Month! National Wear Red Day is Friday, February 6, 2026.

Join us in supporting women’s cardiovascular health by going red — wear red, share helpful resources, and help raise awareness about heart disease.

Every year, communities, workplaces, media, and landmarks across the country unite for one powerful purpose: saving women’s lives. Cardiovascular disease remains the No. 1 killer of women — but together, we can change that.

🔺 Wear red to be seen.
🔺 Wear red to be counted.
🔺 Wear red to be heard.
🔺 Wear red to make an impact.

Together, we’re stronger than heart disease and stroke. ❤️

HEALTHWISE THURSDAY!

Q: What is a wound care center, and who should go there?

A: A wound care center is a clinic that treats wounds that are not healing properly. These can include diabetic ulcers, surgical wounds, bed sores, radiation injuries, and more.

If you have a wound that has not started healing after two weeks or has not healed completely after six weeks, you may be a candidate for a wound care center.

Your wound care team will examine the wound, determine why it is not healing, and create a treatment plan. The goal is to stop the wound from getting worse, prevent infection, and, of course, ultimately heal the wound.

Treatment at a wound care center may include:
✅ Debridement, or the removal of dead or infected tissue.
✅ Tests and scans to determine why your wound is not healing.
✅ Hyperbaric oxygen therapy, which delivers oxygen to your body in a pressurized chamber to help you heal faster.
✅ Applying specialized dressings to protect the wound and prevent infection.
✅ Teaching you how to care for your wound at home.

A wound care center has different types of care providers, like: Surgeons, podiatrists, infectious disease specialists, nurses, and technicians. This team works together to heal your wound and address any underlying causes, so your wound doesn’t come back.

If you have a wound that is not healing, talk with your doctor about whether you should visit a wound clinic for more specialized care.

The Maui Health wound clinic is fully equipped to quickly heal wounds, with specialized staff and advanced treatments all in one place. For more information or to make an appointment, visit https://ow.ly/T71450Y1svS.
