What role does storytelling play in trauma recovery? And what happens when the trauma occurs inside the Church?

In Monday's episode of Hey Tabi, I sit down with Dr. Ann Maree Goudzwaard—biblical counselor, domestic abuse advocate, and founder of Help[H]er Ministries—to talk about trauma, spiritual abuse, coercive control, and the healing power of telling the truth.

Drawing from her experience interviewing survivors, Dr. Goudzwaard shares why story is not just therapeutic, it’s transformational.

Hey Tabi is a self-supporting podcast. We don't accept sponsorships because we want to be uncensored so we can keep saying the hard things, out loud, with our actual lips. If that's something you want to support, you can always head over and Buy Me a Coffee!

Some parts of your story feel too dangerous to name. Sometimes we have no idea why we would even talk about our story. Isn't the past in... the past?

In this episode of Hey Tabi, trauma therapists Adam Young and Tabitha Westbrook talk about why survivors turn the blame inward, why telling the truth can feel destabilizing, why real healing feels disruptive at first, and why your story deeply matters to your healing.

If you’ve ever thought, “Maybe it was my fault,” this conversation is for you.

It's important to recognize and articulate patterns of intrusiveness, critique, and humiliation in familial relationships. By identifying and naming these patterns, we can gain insight into harm experienced and understand the resulting symptoms in our lives.

Join trauma therapists Adam Young and Tabitha Westbrook on the next episode of the Hey Tabi Podcast where we talk about the importance of story. Episode premiers on Monday, 09 February 2026 on all major podcast platforms and The Journey and The Process YouTube channel.

The process of therapy - when it's done well - is inherently disorienting, especially at the beginning of the process. We explore why disruption is a crucial part of effective therapy and challenge the misconception that therapy is always a smooth and pleasant experience.

When abuse is happening, blaming yourself can feel safer than facing the reality of what’s being done to you. This is a learned nervous system response, often shaped long before the relationship began.

In this clip, trauma therapists Adam Young and Tabitha Westbrook talk about why domestic violence survivors turn inward, how faith language can complicate clarity, and why feeling unsafe both staying or leaving is a trauma response.

There are parts of your story you’ve learned not to talk about—because naming them feels disloyal, shameful, or dangerous. But avoiding those chapters may be exactly what’s keeping you stuck.

In this episode of Hey Tabi, trauma therapist Tabitha Westbrook sits down with fellow trauma therapist Adam Young, licensed clinical social worker, author of Make Sense of Your Story and host of The Place We Find Ourselves podcast, to talk about why healing requires honesty—and why some parts of our story feel too threatening to name.

Together, they explore how storywork, trauma therapy, and the nervous system intersect, why effective therapy often feels disruptive at first, and how naming intentional harm (especially in families) brings clarity rather than condemnation. This conversation is especially meaningful for survivors of complex trauma, developmental trauma, abuse, and those navigating healing within a Christian or faith-based context.

Episode premiers Monday, 09 February 2026 on all major podcast platforms & The Journey and The Process YouTube channel.

This is how our Women's Refreshed Retreat helps - these are the words of one of the women that have attended our past retreats.

"I came to the Refreshed Retreat feeling overwhelmed, anxious, and mentally exhausted. Carrying the stresses of raising kids, working part-time, and life in general had me feeling completely worn.

Our family seemed to have one hit after another, and I was barely treading water.

Each time a new issue came, no matter how big (and there were some massive ones) or small, I felt knocked over and was left questioning everything. How can these things just keep happening to us? Some of the issues probably were small and manageable, but I was so worn that each issue, each challenge, each hit, literally left me knocked down.

I went into the retreat just hoping for a small amount of rest and for some skills to help ease my burdens. Amanda did a wonderful job creating an environment for learning, healing and comfort. I didn’t have to share all my layers of hurt, but was welcome to share whatever I felt comfortable with. By the end of the day, I left truly feeling renewed and equipped to keep taking steps forward.

One of the most powerful moments of the retreat was creating a vision board. With paper, glue, markers and instructions to be creative, we all created a visual of our hopes and goals for the year ahead. Through an earlier activity called “forest bathing,” we all spent time in the calming presence of the outdoors. I looked up at the trees and was struck by a realization that their roots run so deep. With these deep roots, they stand strong. Those roots hold the tree in place and protect it from falling with the winds. It was a beautiful moment for me. I realized that if I’m deeply rooted, I won’t be easily knocked over by life’s challenges.

The retreat filled my day with other meaningful moments that allowed me to take deep breaths that I didn’t realize I’d been holding. My struggles didn’t go away, but I left feeling more rooted, rested, and most importantly refreshed!"

This is your invitation to come next weekend. Be refreshed. (registration link in the comments)

New merch alert... Turn on the lights and the rats will run... We know turning on the lights when oppression in present shines a light in the darkness. And we know darkness can never overcome light. Let's raise a righteous ruckus together, shall we? See the links in the first two comments.

In many faith communities, emotions are often misunderstood or suppressed. It's time we find a language to express how we feel in a healthy way. Let's create a safe space to acknowledge them and appreciate how we are created. Don't miss our next Hey Tabi Podcast where I talk with amazing therapist Emma Ward about this topic. 🙏
