Growing a Career — and a Calling — at South County Health

At South County Health, careers aren’t just built — they’re nurtured through opportunity, mentorship, and shared values.

In this Growth & Development spotlight, we’re celebrating Nina Laing, whose remarkable 38-year journey reflects what’s possible when an organization invests in its people — and when people invest in each other.

Nina began her career in 1987 as a registered nurse on the Medical-Surgical floor. Over time, she found her passion in the Intensive Care Unit, where she spent 20 years strengthening her clinical expertise, building confidence, and learning the power of strong leadership.

Her story is one of growth, dedication, and belonging — and we’re proud she’s part of the South County Health family. 💙

In our latest Better Health, Together column with The Independent newspaper, South County Health explores a powerful truth: cancer prevention starts long before diagnosis.

While not all cancers can be prevented, many risk factors are within our control. From routine screenings and healthy lifestyle choices to sun protection and radon testing, small proactive steps can make a meaningful difference over time.

Prevention is not about fear. It is about knowledge, preparation, and giving yourself the best possible chance for a healthy future.

Learn how everyday choices and early detection can support long term health. Read more at https://www.independentri.com/arts_and_living/article_6b32afb5-7805-4e38-bcdc-2624d8d59ed2.html

For more than 36 hours, many of our team members never left.

Others navigated through treacherous road conditions during a State of Emergency — in what will be remembered as one of the most historic storms in Rhode Island’s history — just to get here.

Clinical. Non-clinical. Leaders. Frontline. Support staff.

All united by one mission — caring for our patients when they needed us most.

And when the storm finally eased, many of our nursing leaders — including our COO/CNO — were outside digging cars out of the snow so exhausted staff could get home to their families.

These are the moments that define who we are.

This is dedication.
This is teamwork.
This is South County Health.

To every member of the South County Health team who showed up, stayed late, and put patients first: thank you. Your dedication and teamwork keep our hospital strong — no matter the weather.

Did you know?
Lung cancer isn’t just a smoker’s disease.
Radon is a major risk.

One of the most significant contributors to lung cancer in nonsmokers is radon, a naturally occurring radioactive gas that is colorless, odorless, and impossible to detect without testing. Radon can seep into homes through cracks in foundations and build up over time without any visible warning signs.

Each February, South County Health joins communities across the nation in recognizing Black History Month, a time to honor Black achievements, resilience, and contributions throughout history. It is also a moment to reflect on the ongoing work needed to ensure that every person has access to fair, respectful, and high-quality healthcare.

Black physicians, nurses, scientists, and public health leaders have shaped modern healthcare in meaningful ways.

Trailblazers such as Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler, the first Black women physician in the United States, paved the way for future generations by caring for underserved communities during the Civil War era.

Innovators like Dr. Patricia Bath, pictured, developed laser technology that restored sight for countless patients, transforming care through determination and expertise.

Their achievements remind us that diverse voices and perspectives strengthen healthcare and inspire progress for all.
