It is the goal of AMPT to return all surgical and non-surgical patients to their previous level of function. Comprehensive evaluations, combined with individualized treatment sessions, result in optimal physical gains. One-on-one treatment sessions ensure safe and effective exercises to promote optimal wellness and independence. Sports-specific techniques are used during treatment sessions to ensure a safe return to sports training. Aquatic Physical Therapy and Pilates Physical Therapy offered as a unique treatment opportunity. To address the specifics of an athlete's injury, treatment will aim to increase speed, agility, endurance and balance for the most advantageous return to athletics. Aquatic therapy offers the unique opportunity to maximize rehabilitation potential while maintaining strength and endurance. A combination of both land and aquatic therapy is often the most successful.

Everyone knows that anything worth having takes commitment and effort. Physical Therapy is no exception.
People want the quick fix, however, making meaningful gains takes time.
Physical Therapy is a process. At AMPT, we look at the WHOLE person and how your body is executing movement. We aim to improve mobility, awareness, balance, motor control and strength. Rinse and Repeat. Consistency and hard work gets people to their goals. It is always the goal of Physical Therapy that the patient owns their work, and understands what they need to do moving forward.
Things change over time. Adaptation and activity levels all fluctuate. This means the same or another physical problem may arise. There is no shame is returning to Physical Therapy. A teacher never stops at level one math, a contractor never stops building at the foundation so there is always work to be done. Taking care of our bodies is a life long responsibility and making/keeping them strong takes a little bit of work!

Black lives matter. A black square was posted here on Tuesday, but I then took it down because for *me* it felt unauthentic to post until I knew what actions we could take as business. AMPT stands for Active Motion Physical Therapy, and action is very important to us. As a start to our learning and involvement, we have decided to take the following steps:
1. Donating to American Civil Liberties Union of MA @ aclu_m in support of their work for equitable healthcare.
2. Supporting small black owned businesses by sourcing 25% of our promotional and cleaning products from these businesses.
AMPT has always been and will continue to be an inclusive environment where everyone is welcome. We will continue to take action. This is a start, please let us know of other suggestions! 🖤

Research Application - Running Shoe Type

Do running shoes have magic in them?!
There are A LOT of options when it comes to choosing a running shoe these days. Whether you race, run the trails, or run recreationally there are many choices. It can be overwhelming!
A 2018 study looked at healthy recreational runners to determine if wearing the same shoe over and over influences change to muscles and ligaments around the foot and ankle. This was particularly important to look at in terms of the trend in minimalist shoes. The article implicates that with decreasing support underfoot, the muscles of the foot will increase in strength to tolerate additional load. Now this is not to say that everyone should jump on the minimalist band wagon, but it is important to get your foot to WORK! You want those muscles to be STRONG! The balance is in trying to find a shoe that provides you with the appropriate amount of support and cushion you need without too much.
is a great place as they have many, many choices of shoe types and brands. Runners World also puts out an article each year reviewing the most updated running shoes for every type of run.
Lastly, a good gait analysis combined with recommendations for exercises to improve strength and activity tolerance can go a long way. We are always happy to help.
And in terms of magic… running or getting moving in any way can be magical for our mind and body!

Research Application - Femoroacetabular Impingement Syndrome (FAI)
Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) is one or more structural abnormalities of the hip, a ball and socket joint. The ball and/or the socket of the hip joint can present with the structural abnormality limiting motion and at times causing pain. This abnormal contact at the joint results in stress that disrupts the acetabular labrum and articular cartilage. It is thought that this repetitive stress over time will lead to early hip joint degenerative changes.
Often both surgical and physical therapy management are options provided to a patient with this diagnosis. This study indicated that surgery is not always indicated and that a comprehensive physical therapy plan of care can result in optimal outcomes. Comprehensive treatment included joint mobilization, motor control and strength.
Pilates rehabilitation is one of the many offerings for treatment at AMPT. The equipment including spring tension and support provide the body with feedback improving both joint motion and motor control. Pilates mat based exercises serve as a compliment to the work done in the clinic. Once motion and control have improved, increasing strength to improve function results in great outcomes.
