Such an important distinction…

Positivity is a needed and necessary part of healing, care, and support for yourself and others.

Toxic positivity is a weaponized version of that support that silences and shames those who are hurting.

Positivity is seeing hope in all the ways you can.

Toxic positivity is claiming that there is only good to be found.

Positivity is offering genuine encouragement and support.

Toxic positivity is not allowing someone’s pain to have space for the sake of “good vibes only.”

Positivity can look like affirmations that help you or others shift perspective when the darker parts of existing feel all-encompassing.

Toxic positivity is thinking it’s negative to acknowledge why the heavy feelings are there in the first place.

Remember: There is room for ALL feelings to exist at once. It’s not your job as a friend to tell someone what they should or shouldn’t be feeling. Listening and leaving room for honesty is one of the best ways to show up for someone who is struggling.

Whether it’s mental health or physical health, real and lasting change takes time and consistent repetition of new thinking and behavior. I know it can be easy to let doubt and frustration creep in and cause us to revert to our old ways, but keep going! The results are so worth it!!!
