Meet Tyler Smith — PT, DPT, OCS, DN

Tyler is one of our physical therapists with over 10 years of experience, and one of a small percentage of PTs in the country to hold an Orthopedic Clinical Specialist (OCS) certification.

He is certified and experienced in Dry Needling, along with all the PTs in our clinic.

He specializes in post-surgical rehab and has helped hundreds of patients get back to doing what they love after knee, hip, shoulder, and spine surgeries.

Outside the clinic, Tyler coaches basketball at Walla Walla high school and plays recreationally — so he genuinely understands what it means to want to get back on the court.

If you’re recovering from surgery or dealing with a complex orthopedic injury, Tyler is who you want in your corner.

So many of the issues we deal with in Physical Therapy is due to stiffness.
The root cause isn’t always in the same spot as the area of pain.
Stiffness in one area causes more stress on another part of the body -> turns into pain.

Common areas of stiffness – Ankles, Hips, Upper back.

These are issues we address daily and many people have no idea they have an issue – they are focused on the pain itself.

Exercises in images:

Bent knee eccentric calf raises – knee slightly bent with toes on elevated surface. Heel comes up, then drop to floor slowly – start with 8 reps, with very slowly lowering phase (5s long)

Pigeon Pose – leg on ground, try to keep shin oriented horizontally. Shift weight into leg on floor – 1 minute hold

Field Goal Posts on Foam Roller (up spine) – Lay on foam roller, let arms fall to side keep forearms parallel to floor, let elbows and hands sink to floor together – 2 minute hold

From Luke:
Back in 2013, I was given this note from my surgeon (Dr Tingstad) when I was about to get shoulder surgery, playing baseball.

This question is always in the back of my mind, as it reminds me that we’re always developing who we are, and the small steps we take today shape who and what we become over time - good or bad.

I often tell my patients that 1% in the right direction today will add up considerably over 30 days and more.

So what are you becoming by what you do today?

Many people think Physical Therapy is just for after surgery. A lot of what we see is injuries that aren’t bad enough for surgery, or someone trying to avoid surgery.

Movement issues, strength imbalance, and mechanic faults are the usual culprits when someone is have pain or needing to rest from their sport.

If you want to see if you have an issue with these, or want more info, comment “MOVE” below.

Going through the schedule today and wondered what the average age of all the patients were.
We see a very active population, so it does not surprise us. But this can be uncommon for PT clinics, in general.

We feel so blessed to serve the people we do!

Jaw Pain (aka TMJ Dysfunction) is tricky and can last years in some people.
We see patients with this often and they are usually at their wits end, thinking it won’t ever go away.
We often see improvement in these patients and a great sense of hope.
Through focused work and direct treatment to the TMJ joint, we see great improvement.

If you deal with this, we would be happy to help and get you on track to chewing and moving your jaw without issue.
