Here are five ways to manage stress during the holiday season. 👇🏽

With the rise of COVID-19, the holiday season will look a lot different which may leave you feeling stress from all over. Follow these tips to avoid getting overwhelmed:

1. Mentally prepare for the holidays. Before filling out your calendar for the season, sit down and be realistic with yourself. Whether it's family, health, or down time, focus on what's meaningful to you for this season.

2. Make safe choices for your family. Whether you host a virtual dinner, spend the holidays at home, or create new traditions, be creative and have a meaningful and safe holiday season at home.

3. Learn how to respond to feeling overwhelmed. If you find yourself getting stressed, take a second to slow down and acknowledge why you may be feeling the way you are. Give yourself permission not to sweat the small stuff.

4. Plan fun activities and things to look forward to during the colder and darker months. It could be a weekly movie or game night, going sledding, or even cooking a new meal with your family.

5. Take time for yourself. Take advantage of the quieter winter season to decompress and do some self-care. Plan your goals, read that book, take that online course, or kick off that hobby you've been dying to try.

What's one thing you plan to do during the holidays? 💭

Here are five ways families can help support children's mental health during the pandemic. 👇🏽

COVID-19 has been especially disruptive for children and adolescents who have always relied on school for mental health services. You can support your children mentally and emotionally with these strategies:

1. Encourage children to discuss their feelings. Check in with them about how they're feeling and make it easier to label their "big feelings." Start by saying, "It can be really scary not to know what's going to happen next," or "I know you're angry you can't be with your friends" to get the ball rolling.

2. Explain social distancing. Let your kids know that you're following social distancing guidelines from a trusted authority. You can even use visuals like the "flatten the curve" charts for older kids to help them grasp the importance of the situation.

3. Model and engage in supportive activities. Engage in activities that help manage emotions, including deep breathing, mindfulness, yoga, or meditation that the whole family can do together.

4. Keep moving. Encourage kids and the entire family to keep their bodies moving through indoor or outdoor exercise, walking, and playing active games.

5. Seek mental help when needed. If your child shows concerning behavior such as nightmares, excessive focus on anxieties, increased aggression, or disruptive behaviors, reach out to a healthcare professional.

Young people are struggling most with their mental health right now. Here's why. 👇🏽

The social isolation from social distancing is creating mental health challenges for youth, and with school closures and school-from-home setups, youth are losing vital access to mental health services at a time when they need it most.

Throughout the pandemic, youth ages 11-17 have been more likely than any other age group to score for moderate to severe symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Children and teens depend on routine and structure to support their psychological and emotional development. If you're a parent, try your best to stick to consistent schedules, predictable rules, and expectations on behavior to provide a sense of safety and security.

If Netflix's "The Social Dilemma" made you cringe at your social media use, here are four healthy habits you can adopt.

⏲️ Limit the time you spend scrolling each day. Be intentional when you use social media and avoid mindlessly scrolling on auto-pilot. People who use social media under 30 minutes each day report happier moods and feelings.

☺️ Follow people and pages that bring you joy. Unfollow, block or mute content that bothers you, and instead follow things and people that make you happy and bring value to your feed.

🛏️ Don't use social media before bed. The blue light from your phone and other devices can negatively impact how well you sleep. Log off of social media and shut down your screens an hour before bedtime.

🤳🏾 When you’re out and about, live in the moment. Don’t worry about having the perfect picture to share on social media. Focus on what's happening and the people right in front of you.

Double tap if you plan to start adopting healthy social media habits. What's one thing you do to protect your mental health while using social media? Comment below! 💭

These shocking stats show exactly why we need to talk about mental health more. 👇🏽

- 1/5 of U.S. adults live with some sort of mental disorder.

- Only 17% of adults are functioning at the "optimal mental health."

- 13-20% of minors in the U.S. experience a mental disorder in any given year.

- 75% of mental illnesses manifest before age 24.

Here's the thing about mental illness: it doesn't discriminate. Everyone is vulnerable which means that everyone should be having a conversation about mental health. Mental illnesses are treatable, but before we can expect people to get the help they need, we have to make sure they feel safe reaching out and asking for assistance.

One of the best and little known ways to improve your mental health is journaling. Here are ten journal prompts that have big impacts. 👇🏽

1. Talk about your day and how the events made you feel.
2. Write a list of things you're grateful for.
3. Write a list of your coping mechanisms and rank how well each of them helps you in times of emotional distress.
4. Describe an important goal you have and the steps you're going to take to reach it.
5. Write about how different you were 5 years ago and describe how you've changed since then.
6. Write how you would describe yourself to a stranger.
7. Describe the best compliment you've ever gotten and how it made you feel.

Over time, journaling helps to boost your mind, improve your self-awareness, increase your memory power, and reduce anxiety and depression.

Want to know the formula to showing yourself more compassion? It starts with asking these three questions. 👇🏽

1. What do I need right now?
2. How do I care for myself already?
3. What would I say to a dear friend in a situation like this and how would I say it?

We all need a little more compassion these days. So be as kind to yourself as you are to others.
