You don’t need to run an ultramarathon to change your life…

But you do need to do something that challenges you.

Most people stay stuck because they avoid discomfort.
That edge… where you’re not sure you can do it.

That’s where the breakthrough is.

A year ago I stepped into that at Badwater Cape Fear.
51 miles, mostly on beach sand.
30 mph headwinds.
Pure solitude.

Shoutout to my buddy for pulling me into it… grateful he did.

It scared me.
And that’s the lesson.

We’re gathering on January 31st for another SMART Recovery Alternative Peer Group (APG) focused on the mind–body connection.

APGs are peer-led community spaces that offer support outside of traditional meetings. They focus on shared interests and experiences while supporting recovery across all pathways and all types of addiction; no pressure to share, just a chance to show up as you are and be in community.

Use a simple cadence to fall into a rhythm and carry yourself through something difficult.

Pick a short phrase.
Repeat it with every step, every rep, every breath.

Cadence gives the mind direction. It steadies the nervous system, narrows focus, and shifts attention away from discomfort toward forward motion. The challenge stays the same, but your experience inside it changes.

Whether it’s getting back into the gym, starting a walk, building a habit, or moving through a hard season, cadence gives you a way forward.

One mantra at a time.
