Take Care of Your Diabetic Feet

Amputations, risk of sepsis, severe diabetic foot wounds are diabetic complications that are on the rise and podiatrists blame Covid-19. Not the disease itself, but the fact that many patients have elected to forego their routine healthcare visits considering the pandemic. Now podiatrists are seeing record numbers of foot concerns including infections and even instances of gangrene.

Medical appointments cannot be overlooked. It is extremely important to make sure your feet are taken care of by a foot specialist. When visiting your doctors, make sure to take extreme caution by distancing and mask wearing during these visits. However, they must be kept to possibly saving a limb, or even your life. Do not be shy about consulting with your podiatrist regarding their safety protocols. Many doctors are open to virtual visits to evaluate whether the patient should be seen, so be sure to call if you have a question.

If you are a diabetic, you need to manage your diabetes for your life. A few tips would be to keep active, get proper nutrition and keep your weight under control. Be diligent about tracking your blood sugar levels and check your A1C and cholesterol at least twice a year. Continue to monitor any foot issues and be diligent about trying to avoid foot injuries. Make an appointment to get a complete foot exam if anything unusual is going on with your feet. Remember, if you are on Medicare, you should be entitled to get special diabetic shoes if you need them.

It is essential to continue to make your appointments and show up. Become educated on your diabetes and keep your safety in mind. Your life will depend on this.

Hello everyone. I had a situation which leads me to bring up the topic of using the 99024.

One of my providers did a house call for a patent and billed a 10060. He went back during the global period to check on the work done. He wanted to use a E&M code, but that would not have been appropriate in the global period. The proper code to use is the 99024.

99024 - Postoperative follow-up visit, normally included in the surgical package, to indicate that an evaluation and management service was performed during a postoperative period for a reason(s) related to the original procedure.

Remember that for surgery, the price paid includes aftercare for that surgery. And by using the 99024 code we are telling the insurance company that we are checking our patients progress with follow up visits.

Using the 99024 code will help avoid insurances lowering what they pay us for surgeries. They are unaware of the aftercare provided by our doctors if we do not send claims letting them know that care was provided by using the post-op code. In fact there are some states that this is required. If you haven't been doing this, you should start now.

The 99024 has a $0.00 charge and never pays, of course. Be aware that Sammy will not let you bill for zero amount. We bill for a penny and then write it off once the claim is sent out.
