How Do I Know If My Foot Injury Is Serious?

Generally, a foot injury isn't life-threatening, but it can be or become life-threatening in some cases, especially for diabetics. If you're diabetic, even a minor foot issue or symptom like calluses or a change of skin color can be or become serious and should receive professional attention. For a nondiabetic person with a broken foot, it's rare for someone to have any life-threatening complications, but still, a broken foot is serious enough to require professional care. So are tendon ruptures, foot/ankle sprains, and some other injuries. What we've described are examples of acute foot injuries, but there are also chronic foot injuries that can be serious for different reasons.

A chronic foot injury is a condition like plantar fasciitis. With this particular condition, a patient has recurring heel pain. In fact, recurring or ongoing pain is a symptom shared between many chronic foot injuries. If you've been experiencing pain and/or other symptoms with your feet for over 3 months, then this is likely a chronic issue which requires professional care. Or if your pain/symptoms are severe, then the underlying issue may be serious and require professional care.

How do you remove bunions?

Unfortunately, once you develop a bunion, it will remain unless you have surgery to remove it. There are, however, some steps you can take to make yourself more comfortable and reduce the chance of your bunion getting worse while you wait to have surgery. Warm foot soaks, ice packs, special shoe inserts, and wearing appropriately fitting shoes can all help. Maintaining a healthy weight can make you more comfortable overall and help prevent you from developing bunions in the future by taking pressure off the joints of your feet. Surgery will depend on the size of the bunion being addressed as well as your unique anatomy. Our experienced podiatrists believe in providing our patients with personal attention and care, so they achieve the best bunion surgery results possible.

How to Treat Ingrown Toenails

If you have diabetes, nerve problem in the leg or foot, poor blood circulation to your foot, or an infection around the nail, see a provider right away. Don't try to treat an ingrown nail at home.

Otherwise, to prevent an ingrown nail at home:

- Soak the foot in warm water 3 to 4 times a day if possible. After soaking, apply antibiotic ointment to the inflamed skin.

When trimming your toenails:

- Briefly soak your foot in warm water to soften the nails.
- Use a clean, sharp trimmer.
- Trim toenails straight across the top. Do not taper or round the corners or trim too short.
- Do not try to cut out the ingrown portion of the nail yourself. This will only make the problem worse.

What are the Symptoms of Bunions?

In people who have a bunion, the first metatarsal bone gradually moves sideways towards the other foot. As a result, the front of the foot becomes wider and the joint at the base of the big toe bulges out. The big toe leans in towards the other toes, sometimes deforming them too. Bunions can be painful, but not all of them are even if they are very big.
