"Betty got a call to head to Atria Park of Pacific Palisades and support the community in their evacuation from the Palisades fire that had taken a quick turn in their direction," says Remon Pagels, Executive Director of Atria Hillcrest. "The drive was long and hazardous with many roads being closed along her route and winds reaching hurricane-force strength. Betty stayed the course, donned an N95 mask to protect against the hazardous air quality, and calmly helped residents on to the bus, many of whom required mobility assistance. Lives were saved because of Betty."

For these reasons and many more, Betty was recognized as a 2025 Southern California Excellence in Service Award winner from the California Assisted Living Association (CALA).

"Betty has been a beloved member of Atria Hillcrest for years, and we are so proud of her bravery. She is a friend to our residents, and they have become a family to her. This isn’t just a job to Betty. Being with our residents means a lot to her."

Congratulations to Betty on the recognition and for being a key part of the community every day! 🎉

“There are so many interesting things to do and so many new things to learn here,” says Shirley, a resident of Atria Willow Glen. 📚

A lover of historical fiction and nonfiction, Shirley was thrilled to browse her community's book fair, leaving with a dozen new books. She especially enjoyed how the books were organized by genre and even volunteered to help with the next event!

Between educational lectures, art classes and group fitness, Shirley continues to embrace every opportunity to learn and stay curious. "My mother was 50 when she went back to finish school," she adds. Her mom always impressed upon her the importance of continuing to try new things, and Shirley embraces that philosophy to this day.

It may be getting colder outside, but we kept things toasty with our Coats & Kindness Social Series events!

We enjoyed winterwear fashion shows with seasonal treats – including a decadent affogato bar – as we collected coats and warm items to donate to the local charities. The stars of the show? Handmade hats, gloves and scarves made by residents!

We can't think of a better way to stay cozy and help others.

On Veterans Day, our communities came together to honor the heroes who have served our country.

We shared a patriotic lunch, told personal stories, learned about the history of the holiday and paid tribute to the veterans working and living in our communities – and those who continue to inspire us every day.

To all who have served: Thank you for your bravery and service.

Join us in saying congrats to Pat and Norbert on celebrating their 56th wedding anniversary!🥂💍

Their love story began with heartfelt letters exchanged while Norbert was serving in the military, eventually tying the knot in style in Las Vegas. They've been inseparable ever since. When asked how life is treating them at Atria Cary, they smiled and said, “We’re just cruising along.”

This Veterans Day, we’re honoring Terry, a proud U.S. Army veteran and resident of Atria at Hometown, whose 20-year military career took him from the jungles of Vietnam to the courtrooms of Army JAG.

Terry enlisted in 1965, serving first with the 101st Airborne Division before volunteering for Vietnam. He later joined the 173rd Airborne Brigade, spending nearly a year in combat. When he returned to the States, he re-enlisted, transitioned into the legal field, and became a senior non-commissioned officer in Army JAG. From managing court-martials to working alongside military judges and senior officers, Terry found purpose in upholding justice and supporting fellow soldiers – especially those who needed help the most.

After retiring from the Army in 1988, Terry continued his legal career as a court reporter for major federal agencies, even taking testimony in high-profile cases. Through every chapter of his life, his sense of duty and gratitude never wavered.

Today, Terry enjoys a peaceful life at Atria at Hometown with his wife by his side. He’s found community among fellow veterans and joy in the simple pleasures of bingo, Bible study and good company.

“I love it here,” Terry says. “It’s peaceful – no stress, no problems. Everyone here, from the staff to the residents, is wonderful.”

We’re proud to celebrate Terry and all the veterans who live and work at Atria – heroes whose courage and service continue to inspire us every day. 🇺🇸

"When they landed on the moon, they thought it would be made of dust," shares Bob, a resident of Atria Park of Ann Arbor. "They were shocked to find out that they could land on it and walk around. It was such an incredible part of our discoveries that we found with this mission, along with many more discoveries."

A head engineer of the Apollo 11 mission that sent the men to the moon in 1969, Bob gave a presentation on his career to his fellow residents, keeping them on the edge of their seats.

During this mission, there were 400,000 people working to get us to the moon, and Bob was in charge of 2,500 engineers within that group. He helped to train the astronauts and got to be at the base of the launch when it happened.

Even after all of these accomplishments, he says, "My best advice to everyone is to be a nice person and treat everyone as an asset. I have accomplished many things in life and have tried to be friendly to everyone I met."

Thanks for sharing this with us, Bob!

We are honored to recognize Neal, a resident of Atria Park of Vintage Hills and a proud veteran of the U.S. Army Reserve, who served during World War II. "I can still remember hearing about the landings in Normandy while I was stationed in Korea," Neal shares. His story stands as a reminder of the courage shown by those who served, and that the historical events that shaped our world aren't as long ago as they may seem.

Today and every day, we extend gratitude to Neal and to all the brave heroes who fought for freedom.

This year marks 80 years since the end of World War II. At Atria Seville, residents came together to honor that legacy with a Spirit of ’45 celebration.

Among them was Bob, who was just 18 in 1945 when he joined the Military’s Victory Parade Marching Band. His willingness to serve, along with so many others, reminds us why the “Greatest Generation” will never be forgotten.

Starting with our Monster Mash Bingo, Kids and Kindness events, and ending with a Halloween Party with Buckshot and friends. It was nice having our RVP Natasha join us and see how festive the community was in partnership with Burton Valley Elementary and the Girl Scouts.

We appreciate Miss Sharon who comes in with the biggest smile always greeting everyone. She has worked for the Post Office for thirty-five years when she applied for the job it was for job security because she was going to be a mom. Miss Sharon favorite part of the job is getting to meet new people that she wouldn’t get to meet on a regular basis. The residents are always looking to greet her when they pick up the mail and having a short conversation. Most memorable moment is being a union representative and being able to advocate for others and seeing a positive impact. On her down time she likes roller skating. Fun fact about her is the appreciation she has for herself as she grow older and milestones she keeps accomplishing.

Page Turners was a nice event discussing our favorite books and how we enjoy even having our smaller book clubs within the community. Our Executive Director Kelli and Sara have their own mini club and trade John Grisham book. After they discuss great points about the book. Some of the students from Burton Valley Elementary join us and share what books they are looking forward to reading. Everyone enjoyed the nice tea selection we had for the event with tea sandwiches.

We wanted to highlight our Exceptional Service Award Recipient Yolanda. She always has a smile on her face will to help wherever it is needed. The residents are always looking forward to seeing her and creating memories that will be cherished. She is always up for a theme day with her fashionista outfits. “I feel like Superwoman,” says Yolanda, a Resident Medication Assistant at Atria Valley View, reflecting on her role supporting residents. For the past 13 years, she has brought care and positivity to her work every day. Yolanda’s journey at Atria began in dining services, and she quickly transitioned to housekeeping. It was a nurse at the community who saw her potential and encouraged her to train as a med tech. “I didn’t have experience, but they gave me a chance,” Yolanda recalls. “That gave me so much confidence.”
Now, Yolanda loves making a difference in residents’ lives. “The residents are like my second mom and dad,” she shares. “Knowing I’m helping them makes me so happy.” Yolanda also credits Atria with fostering a supportive environment. “It’s like family here. That’s why I stay.” Thank you, Yolanda, for your incredible dedication, and for making Atria Valley View a place where residents and employees alike feel cared for and supported. Anyone have a favorite memory to share with Yolanda?

Everyone here at Atria Valley View wanted to give a huge thank you to Ron and Sargon for hosting a Barbecue dinner this past week. They cater a Barbecue dinner from Dad's Barbecue Next Generation. Everyone enjoyed the food and gave great compliments. The staff had a great time socializing with residents over a nice meal. Hosting the Barbecue was a way of them giving back to the community in appreciation of how happy Ron is at Atria Valley View.
