🤔 Gut Health Series #7
Many medications can upset the gut balance by not only killing harmful bacteria but also killing some good bacteria that are part of the normal gut flora. Some of the most common drugs that can affect gut health include:
* Antibiotics
* Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
* Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs)
* Antacids
* Laxatives
* Chemotherapy drugs
* Antidepressants
* Anti-anxiety drugs
* Pain medications
* Sleeping pills
* Statins

Of course, this is a calculated risk that is likely to be worthwhile in order to treat your issue. So to support proper gut health when taking medications, it can be a good idea to take probiotics and prebiotics to help maintain the appropriate levels of good bacteria in your gut. Also, eating a healthy and fiber-rich diet filled with foods such as fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes to help grow beneficial bacteria, and staying away from processed meat, sugar, and fatty foods that induce the proliferation of bad bacteria is helpful as well.

🤔 Gut Health Series #4

Digestion begins in your mouth. When you start chewing, glands in your mouth and throat secrete saliva that contains enzymes to kick-start the digestive process even before you swallow. Saliva contains the primary enzyme called amylase that starts breaking down starches and sugars to allow for food to become more moist and smaller. Another enzyme in your saliva called lingual lipase helps to break down fats and its action continues into the stomach. The more you chew and work the enzymes into your food, the easier it is for the rest of your digestive system, and saliva acts as a lubricant when swallowing. Saliva also has antimicrobial compounds to kill off unwanted bacteria.

🤔 Gut Health Series #3

Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) are the most common GI issues and occur in GI tracts that have no structural abnormality but are not functioning well or moving appropriately. Everything tests normal and a blood test, x-ray, and endoscopy will yield no abnormal results that can be associated with the symptoms. Examples of functional GI disorders are gas, bloating, chest pain, heartburn, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, food poisoning, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), incontinence, dyspepsia, and infant colic.

Structural GI disorders occur because there is a change or problem within the structure of the GI tract and examination and test results show abnormalities and poor functioning in the digestive system. These structural issues can occur anywhere in the GI tract. In certain cases, treatment involves the surgical removal or correction of the structural abnormality. Examples of structural GI disorders are strictures, stenosis, hemorrhoids, a**l fistulas,
inflammatory bowel disease, ulcerative colitis, diverticular disease, colon polyps, colon cancer, and Crohn’s disease.
