After two years of weekly speech and language therapy with this cutie, today was our last session. He’s made amazing progress, and Finn and I will really miss seeing this family regularly. I love my job, but it’s hard to say goodbye sometimes.

Cool Autism Awareness post: This is my husband, Tom Matousek, who happens to be a Disney artist with a young man who shares his name, Tom Matousek, who has autism, meeting for the first time in person at Epcot’s Festival of the Arts recently. They connected through social media a while ago from opposite ends of the country. It’s a pretty cool story if you’re inclined to read it here and in the comments below. From Tom: It’s hard to find the words but I am finding that my journey/career sometimes has a higher purpose than I ever could have imagined. This was a very special moment during my two weeks at Epcot’s Festival of the Arts this year: two artistic Tom Matousek’s from opposite coasts of the country together for the first time. I am absolutely humbled. I’ll post Tom’s mom’s comments below:

One of my students who stutters resonated with this quote from an article we read about avoidance reduction today. He wrote it on a post-it note and put it on his wall to remind himself to keep showing up and talking in all situations, whether he stutters or not. It’s a good reminder for me, also, to keep showing up even if I’m doing things imperfectly.

I love that I get to work with families (and play with games and toys, like Legos, in the process)…and Finn loves getting lots of pets and treats when he goes to work with me.

I’m not an artist, but I can follow directions. I love to use drawing activities with my students and they love being able to draw pictures (following step-by-step instructions) that they wouldn’t be able to draw on their own.
