Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center encompasses a collection of health care offerings, including a critical access hospital, emergency room, two family clinics, women’s clinic, specialty clinic, and a medical transportation division. For over twenty years, Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center has provided an extensive and always-expanding array of health care services to the Spanish Peaks region and beyond. We’re located in scenic Southern Colorado, with majestic peaks framing our primary campus on U.S. Highway 160, just three miles west of I-25. Under a contract with the State of Colorado, Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center is operated by the Huerfano County Hospital District, a Colorado Special District, directed by a five-member, county-elected Board of Directors.

Celebrating Dr. Walter West 💙❤️

On Veterans Day, we honored the retirement of Dr. Walter West, who has been a cornerstone of care at Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center since 2018. After more than five decades in medicine, Dr. West has touched countless lives with his skill, compassion, and dedication.

It is especially meaningful that Dr. West chose Veterans Day for his retirement, as he himself is a proud veteran. His life of service—both to his country and to his patients—reminds us of the many ways one person can make a lasting impact.

From the emergency room to the community, Dr. West has been a trusted presence, a mentor, and a friend. We thank him for his years of commitment and wish him joy and fulfillment in this next chapter.

At Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center, we’re proud to celebrate the incredible care provided by our Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners — true pillars of our healthcare family.

🩺 October 6–12 flew by as we celebrated Physician Assistants Week, recognizing the dedication, expertise, and kindness our PAs bring to every patient interaction. They don’t just treat — they uplift our entire community.

💙 This week, we honor our Nurse Practitioners during National NP Week (Nov 9–15). Our NPs are trusted leaders in healthcare, building meaningful relationships and improving lives with every visit. 🫁 November is COPD & Lung Cancer Awareness Month 🫁

At Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center, we recognize the importance of early detection, ongoing management, and compassionate care for those affected by COPD and lung cancer.

Our dedicated Cardiopulmonary Service Line offers a full range of services designed to protect and improve lung health:
Advanced Pulmonary Function Testing, including plethysmography and diffusion studies.

Diagnostic and monitoring tools: EKG, Holter/Event Monitors, Pulse Oximetry, Peak Flow, and ABI measurements

Treatment support: BiPAP/CPAP, Nebulizer Treatments, Incentive Spirometry, and Overnight Oximetry

Whether you're being evaluated for respiratory disorders, managing chronic lung conditions, or seeking prevention, our team is here to help you breathe easier every day.

Grand Junction, CO, October 30, 2025 – A group of 32 rural hospital and health organizations, as part of the Western Healthcare Alliance (WHA), want their Medicare patients to be better informed when choosing a plan in 2026.

Both patients and health systems have struggled with Medicare Advantage plans that affect patient care and system operations. Issues include long waits for authorizations, denial of medically necessary services, and delays in payments. Our Story

Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center (SPRHC) has provided extensive health care and education resources to Southern Colorado for over twenty years. As Huerfano County’s largest employer, the health care and veterans living services provider is the region’s leader in hospital management, serving patients and families throughout a multiple-county market.

As an innovative health resource, SPRHC offers a patient-centered medical system that includes a critical access hospital, two family clinics, women’s clinic, specialty clinic, surgical team, physical and occupational therapies, laboratory, imaging department and the beloved Spanish Peaks Veterans Community Living Center.

Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center is located in Southeastern Colorado, just three miles west of the rural City of Walsenburg, in Huerfano County. Under a contract with the State of Colorado, the health center is operated by the Huerfano County Hospital District, a Colorado Special District, directed by a five-member, county-elected Board of Directors.
