Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center President Peter Healy signed a rose vial to be featured in the 2026 OneLegacy Donate Life Rose Parade Float! The rose vial dedication garden on the float honors donors, donor families, recipients, patients waiting, and healthcare heroes who make organ and tissue donation and transplantation possible.

On New Year’s Day, New England Donor Services and Aidan’s family will honor Aidan “AJ” Skinner with a floragraph on the 2026 One Legacy Donate Life Rose Parade® Float in Pasadena, CA. Aidan was an organ donor after he died at age 12, and saved 5 lives, and his corneas restored sight.

In honor of National Caregivers Month we are highlighting NEDS volunteer Debby Blanchard who was a caregiver for her husband Bob before and after he received a heart transplant two years ago.

“My husband Bob recently celebrated the 2-year anniversary of his heart transplant. We are so grateful for this gift!”

“Everyone approaches the ‘caregiver’ role in their own way. Despite a history of heart issues, I wasn’t expecting the significant decline that led to his transplant after the summer of 2023. My best tip was from a nurse in the early days post-transplant who said, “Nobody’s path is linear.” I was pressing for details about what to expect, but she assured me that every patient has a different course. As a recently retired school administrator, I pride myself in my planning and problem-solving skills. I quickly learned that neither of those attributes were going to be helpful! I saw my role primarily as emotional support, but also logistical support and advocacy. I wanted to learn as much as possible.”

“Another coping strategy was to accept help - as difficult as that can be. I didn’t feel guilty about taking people up on their offers to help: from dog walking - to feeding chickens - to laundry & groceries. As a family, we developed a communication plan to keep friends and family in the loop. Thankfully, Bob and I have two great kids and their spouses who shared in everything. Lastly, Bob’s strongest coping strategy was humor. Humor has a way of lifting us both up - as well as those around us. We continue to have a profound sense of gratitude for all aspects of this process with New England Donor Services and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.”

Thank you Debby for sharing your story and for all the volunteer efforts you and Bob do with New England Donor Services today!

At four years old, Isla was diagnosed with idiopathic scoliosis. Because of two donor tissue grafts, Isla was able to have a successful scoliosis correction surgery.

"While getting my four-year-old ready for bed one night, I paused and looked more closely at her back. She looked— crooked. One shoulder was higher than the other, and her ribs on one side had the slightest twist forward. A few months later, Isla was diagnosed with idiopathic scoliosis.”

“By age 7, Isla needed to wear her full-torso back brace full time, and her spinal curve was getting worse at every appointment. She was in pain at ballet, in PE, and even walking home from the bus stop. So at 8 years old, we made the decision to get her scoliosis correction surgery. This treatment included putting two “magic” growth rods in her spine, anchored directly into her vertebrae. While she was recovering, a nurse handed us two information cards for the two donor tissue grafts Isla had received during her surgery.”

“New England Donor Services and their community of donors and their families helped ensure my child had access to the tissues she needed to have a successful surgery and recovery. The bone grafts she received helped decrease the risk of complications and will keep her spinal screws strong and anchored as she runs, dances, and grows. Given her age, she may need additional surgeries as a teenager, but our family is comforted by the fact that organizations like NEDS exist to help support us when that time comes."

Thank you, Rhiannon, Cameron, and Isla, for sharing your story!

Just before his 24th birthday, Gary passed away unexpectedly and was able to give the Gift of Life. Now his mom, Heather, shares his story in New England and Ohio to encourage others to register their decision to be a donor.

“At the age of thirteen, I needed to get my son, Gary, a Connecticut state ID. Gary had recently moved here from Ohio, and while standing in line at the DMV, he turned to me and asked if he could become an organ donor. Without hesitation, I said, “Of course.” Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that nine and a half years later, that innocent, inquisitive question would become our heartbreaking reality.”

“When Gary turned eighteen, he decided to move back to Ohio. I couldn’t change his mind, and as hard as it was to let him go, I supported his independence. The next four years weren’t easy for him — or for me. Life tested him in ways a mother wishes her child never had to face. But no matter the distance, I never missed a call. We talked often, and I made sure he knew that no matter what, I was always here for him.”

“Nineteen days before his twenty-fourth birthday, Gary’s beautiful life came to an unexpected end. In the depths of my grief, I clung to the memory of that day at the DMV — the moment he chose to give the ultimate gift. My son became a multi-organ donor, saving and transforming the lives of others. Though Gary is no longer here, his heart continues to beat on — literally and figuratively. His spirit lives within the people he helped, and within everyone who knew and loved him.”

“Because of Gary’s passing, I have become a volunteer and advocate with New England Donor Services, Donate Life Connecticut, and Life Connection of Ohio. Through these organizations, I’ve met incredible people — other parents and families who have also experienced the loss of their loved ones — and I’ve learned so much about the impact of organ, eye, and tissue donation.”

“Gary loved turtles. He had one for almost twenty years, and it was his favorite pet. After he passed away, I created a hashtag and phrase in his memory: and . Turtles are mysterious creatures — they move at their own pace and show up when you least expect them. That was my Gary. Thus, the hashtags were born. On Saturday, November 1st, I will be participating in a 5K walk/run in Maumee, Ohio, with Life Connection of Ohio in memory of my Gary.”
