I thoroughly enjoyed meeting up with some of the doulas in our area. We talked about our experiences of doulaing in our community, as well as our personal maternal health experiences and challenges over good food!! I can’t wait until the next one 🩷!! These ladies are awesome 🤩!!

On Friday, May 10, 2024 at 1:45 pm, baby girl flew into this world weighing 6 lbs and 2 oz 😅! It was beautiful to witness her mom maneuver her first induction, and listen to her body throughout the whole birthing experience. Double hip squeezes definitely were the MVPs for this natural birth!! Happy Birthday Baby Yff!!

I didn’t take a lot of pictures yesterday, but the It Takes A Village-Maternal Health Expo was a huge success 🙌🏾!! I was so glad to be able to get around to most of the vendors! I can’t wait to get all the information I collected together so I can share it!! A special thank you to everyone that participated…giving us the opportunity to serve the Macon-Bibb community.

It Takes A Village Maternal Health Expo invites the community to attend the 3rd Annual It Takes A Village - Maternal Health Expo on April 20, 2024. The event’s purpose is to provide education and resources from within our community and state to help keep the maternal family safe. This year the Expo’s focus is on Dads. We cannot conquer the maternal mortality rates in silos therefore it is important to educate the one closest to the mom to help ensure her safety.

The event will bring awareness to the maternal mortality and morbidity rates in the state of Georgia and our local community. It will empower attendees with resources to help keep mothers and babies safe. It really does take a village to keep our maternal families safe.

Statistics:

~Georgia ranks #3 in the nation for maternal mortality. (CDC)

~African American women are 3 to 4 times more likely to die from a postpartum incident than their white counterparts. (CDC)

~The United States has the highest maternal mortality rates among most developed countries. (CDC)

The expo will be on April 20, 2024, from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. at Memorial Park Community Center, located at 2465 2nd Street Macon, GA 31206. There will be hospitals, doulas, therapists, physicians, music, door prizes, and so much more!

It Takes A Village-Maternal Health Expo is partnering with the Macon-Bibb County Health Department to host this event. The health department is dedicated to preventing disease, promoting health, and protecting our community against health threats through education, service, advocacy, and collaboration.

Happy Black Maternal Health Week 🫶🏾!!! Thank you to for creating this week, and a platform that joins dozens upon dozens of organizations together to combat the issues of Black maternal health! The theme for BMHW 2024 is “Our Bodies STILL Belong to Us: Reproductive Justice NOW!” Widespread restrictions on abortion care access coupled with rising cases of criminalization due to pregnancy loss continue to widen the gaps of adverse maternal and birth outcomes in the U.S.

Happy World Doula Week 🫶🏾🌻!!!

The purpose of World Doula Week (WDW) is to empower doulas all over the world to improve the physiological, social, emotional, and psychological health of women, newborns and families in birth and in the postpartum period. The World Doula Week events will take place all over the world during the same week, stating the benefits of the presence of doulas in birth and in the postpartum period:

~Reduces the incidence of C-sections
~Increases new parents’ confidence in the care of their newborn
~May shorten the length of labor
~Reduces epidural and analgesic requests
~Increases breastfeeding initiation and continuation
~Increases mother’s satisfaction of birth experience
~Can reduce the incidence of postpartum mood disorders

When is World Doula Week?

World Doula Week begins with World Doula Day on March 22nd and will go through March 28th annually. March 22 was chosen because it is the spring equinox, which represents the return of fertility in countless cultures 🙂.

Today, I want to shout out Ashanti Travey. I have known Ashanti for years now through mutual friends and work. She has always been a gentle soul but a firecracker if she needs too. We see each other and can start talking about anything. I admire her for 2 main reasons: her strength and her passion!

Her strength was displayed when she loss her mother unexpectedly. I was so broken for her because I couldn't imagine losing my mom so unexpectedly especially when she is like your best friend. The strength she displayed was unimaginable. Also, she has been a pillar for her family through it all. Her passion and her business is helping new and future moms, The Bloom Doula. She is ready to educate and support mothers. I always say how important doulas are and I wish I would have known as a young mother.

Among all that she does and all that she has endured, she is a single mother of a beautiful little girl. She is out there helping others while raising a queen of her own. Keep up the good work and spreading your love throughout the community. It doesn't go unnoticed! 🩷
