Because I had several questions on why my horses were not wearing blankets, I am sharing information on how blanketing decisions are made. My horses have a warm dry barn right behind them that they usually go into if it's raining, but they decided they didn't mind the snow. My older horses not in the picture were actually blanketed, but these are young fat horses in the pic.
I decide who gets blanketed based on: if they are very old, very young or thin or do not have a good winter coat. If it gets below 20 or is very windy and they have an open sided shelter so that I think the wind could ruffle their fur, I will blanket them even if fat. But I blanketed one of my older mares last night and by this morning, she had taken her blanket off. She was standing in the barn however, so was nice and warm.
As we manage our horses in the colder weather, the question arises of whether or not to blanket your horse. Find out more from TEVA!
