Caring for a loved one should you do it or not?
The past two weeks I’ve been receiving calls on this topic. Many people feel obligated to become the caregiver and others simply know they can’t do the role. Mixed emotions come in to play for families either way.
I typically ask the person calling or meeting with me what does becoming a caregiver mean to you? What does quality of life mean to you?
“ caregiver” means many different things to many people. It can be a real eye opener once we start talking.
For some it means doing laundry, tidying the house, grocery shopping, picking up medication, driving to doctors appointments and making sure the person feels safe.
For others it means all the above plus meal preparation feeding, bathing and dressing assistance with all other aspects of personal self care.
Or it can also mean both of the above plus providing emotional and behaviour support, transferring, lifting, repositioning, dealing with incontinence, pressure sores, wounds, cognitive impairment plus much more!
It’s extremely important before you decide to take on the caregiver role that you take a good hard look at your life, your wants, your desires and where you see your own future.
This IS NOT A SELFISH thing to do it is actually extremely important. You need to know what you want so you know if you can truly commit to such an important role.
You also you need be able to acknowledge your own limitations and set realistic expectations with important people in your life as well as with the individual you will be caring for BEFORE you take on the responsibility and the role.
Do some soul searching and ask yourself about what the words power and control mean to you and if given those roles will you be able to give up that role easily.
Consider family dynamics over the years and more importantly the dynamic between yourself and the person you will be caring for.
How do you feel about the words anger, resentment and loss of autonomy? What do those words also mean to you as an individual.
How do you resolve conflicts? Are you a proactive or reactive person?
As a caregiver it’s also very important that you know how to set limitations for yourself. You need to know where to draw the line for your role and realize you can’t do it all on your own.
There comes a point in EVERY caregivers life where they need to be able to accept the fact they need help.
You need to have time set a side for yourself.
You need to have respite hours put in place and scheduled.
You need to be able to hand over the reins and let others help you.
You need to no matter what put your health and welfare first.
You need to put your personal relationships ( husband/wife, children etc.) as the priority.
You need to know how to walk away from situations that cause anger and conflict.
You need to be able to not take things personally despite who you are caregiving for its very difficult at times.
You must be able to be self aware so you don’t get caregiver burnout!!
You must have supports in place for yourself someone you can openly vent to and trust them with your feelings and know they won’t be shared but yet know you won’t be judged.
Caregiving is not an easy role. It’s a HUGE MASSIVE responsibility you are taking on so never dismiss what you are getting yourself in to.
Becoming a caregiver can also be a very rewarding role, it forms a bond and a relationship with the person you are caring for like no other.
Search out all the services and supports that are available to both of you and use them.
Lastly, know that providers like Always Here Care are here to help you. Not all service providers are the same. We offer a very unique service to our clients and we work 100% with the family to ensure you truly get person centered planning.
