Ozempic, Wegovy and Rybelsus are new medications that have proven very effective in managing blood sugar and weight. But understand the risks and be alert to any changes in your vision if you are taking these medications.

I received the very sad news this morning that Dr. Lionel Chisholm passed away. Dr. Chisholm trained Dr. Mansour as well as countless others at the University of Toronto, Department of Ophthalmology and later at West Virginia University. He worked at The Virginia Retina Center from 2011 to 2020. Dr. Chisholm was the consummate gentleman and knew the retina like the back of his hand. He will be so deeply missed. Our condolences to his wife, Ann as well as their extended family.

March is women's history month and what better time than to highlight some women in Ophthalmology! Today we are highlighting Dr. Isabel Hayes Chapin Barrows (1845-1913). Click below for more information about her life and contributions to the world of Ophthalmology.

This , we are highlighting the of ophthalmology! Each week this month, check back for another trailblazing female physician.

This week, we’re highlighting Isabel Hayes Chapin Barrows (1845-1913), the first woman to practice ophthalmology in the United States. Dr. Barrows studied medicine at the Women’s Medical College of the New York, and specialized in ophthalmology in Zurich, Switzerland. She opened her own private ophthalmology practice in Washington, D.C. in 1870 and became one of the first female professors at Howard University Medical School in 1871. She later left ophthalmology to follow her husband into ministry work.
See more in the Museum of the Eye’s galleries! Both the Remarkable Women exhibit and our “Women & Minorities in Ophthalmology” video will be open until the end of April.
