Stress can feel overwhelming, especially when emotions rise quickly, and your body feels like it’s in overdrive. One helpful skill from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for managing intense stress is the TIPP skill, which focuses on quickly calming the body’s stress response.

TIPP stands for:

❄️ Temperature – Changing your body temperature (like holding ice or splashing cold water on your face) can help activate your body’s calming reflex and slow down intense emotions.

🏃 Intense Exercise – Short bursts of physical activity (jumping jacks, running in place, push-ups) help burn off stress hormones and release built-up tension.

🌬️ Paced Breathing – Slowing your breath signals to your nervous system that you are safe. Try inhaling for 4 seconds and exhaling for 6 seconds to help your body settle.

💪 Progressive Muscle Relaxation – Tense and release muscle groups throughout your body to reduce physical tension and bring awareness back to the present moment.

These tools are designed to help regulate your body during moments of high stress or emotional overwhelm. Once your body begins to calm, it becomes easier to think clearly and choose how you want to respond.

Throughout this month, we’ll be sharing stress awareness, coping tools, and practical skills you can use in everyday life.

You don’t have to manage stress alone—support and effective tools are available. Find support on our website at:

Stress isn’t always a bad thing—but when it goes unnoticed or unaddressed, it can take a real toll on our minds and bodies.

Stress shows up in different ways:

Eustress – the motivating kind of stress that helps us rise to challenges like starting a new job, planning a big event, or working toward a goal.

Everyday stress – the pressures of daily responsibilities, deadlines, relationships, and busy schedules.

Distress – when stress becomes overwhelming and begins to impact our emotional, physical, and mental well-being.

Our bodies often tell us we’re stressed before we consciously realize it. Some common signs include:
• Trouble sleeping
• Tight shoulders or headaches
• Feeling overwhelmed or irritable
• Racing thoughts or difficulty concentrating
• Changes in appetite or energy

Stress can come from many places—work demands, life transitions, relationship challenges, financial concerns, or experiences that affect our sense of safety and trust.

Taking time to check in with yourself is not selfish—it’s necessary. Small steps like resting, setting boundaries, moving your body, and talking with someone you trust can make a meaningful difference.

If stress has begun to feel overwhelming, you don’t have to navigate it alone. Support and healing are possible.

March is Self-Injury Awareness Month
Self-harm is often a way people cope with overwhelming emotions—not a bid for attention, but a sign that someone is hurting.
At our practice, we focus on helping individuals build skills that reduce self-harm and increase emotional resilience. Small changes can make a big difference.
If urges feel intense, try:

• Using grounding skills (5-4-3-2-1, cold water, movement)
• Expressing emotions through writing or art
• Reaching out to someone you trust

You don’t have to do this alone.
If you are in crisis or having thoughts of su***de, call or text 988 to reach the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline (U.S.) — free, confidential, 24/7.
Healing isn’t about perfection. It’s about building safer ways to cope, one step at a time.

Center for Holistic Psychotherapy

We are a psychotherapy center formerly known as Marianne Clyde Center for Holistic Psychotherapy, Marianne has now retired and transferred ownership to us. We have been with her for several year and we are now Center for Holistic Psychotherapy. We provide a Holistic approach to mental health treatments, which means we look at the totality of our clients and help them achieve their wholeness. We also believe that everyone has an innate drive to create value as we were all born with self-worth. Our goal is to guide our clients in connecting to their Core Value. We work with clients who present with anxiety, depression, family and relationship dynamics and other mental health issues. We also believe in community outreach and are fortunate to be supported by our surrounding communities in Prince William, Fauquier, and surrounding communities in Virginia.
