When your kids are no longer kids (sad!), the “therapy” usually changes from “first words” to “first jobs” or “first dates.”
Here’s what speech therapy looks like when the goal is independence:
Communication! It’s not just about saying the words and forming the sentences! We work on:
🗣️ Friendships and Dating - Making new friends, having meaningful conversations, learning how to date
🗣️ Self-advocacy - Learning how to say “I need help” or “I don’t like that.”
🗣️ Navigating Tech - Mastering devices for social media, texting, or emails.
🗣️Social Nuance - Understanding sarcasm, “unspoken” rules, and building genuine friendships.
🗣️ Reading & Writing - Improving literacy for every day tasks like texting, emails, college, and work
Cognition & “Adulting!” Executive functioning is the essential ingredient to independence. We help with:
🧠Planning & Time Management - Using tools to manage a schedule and plan for the future.
🧠Problem Solving - What do I do if I miss the bus or lose my wallet?
🧠Transition Planning - Planning for life after graduation; college, work, day programs?
🧠Money Skills - Handling transactions and basic budgeting during a grocery run.
🧠Other Life Skills - Learning how to use public transportation, cooking, cleaning, and more!
Eating! Feeding goals don’t have an expiration date! We focus on:
🍎 Chewing and Swallowing - Do we still need to work on muscle strength and coordination? Do they still need modifications?
🍎 Safe Swallowing - Strategies for independence while eating out with friends.
🍎 Expanding Palates - Gently introducing new textures to make social dining less stressful.
🍎 Aversions & Anxiety - Creating a safe environment to easy anxiety and promote healthy oral intake.
🍎 Meal Prep - Planning and executing simple, nutritious meals safely.
Transitioning into adulthood is truly a team sport! Whether your young adult is prepping for a vocational program or simply wants more autonomy at home, we’re here to help.
