Client Spolight: Doron and Bingo

Three years ago, we paired Doron, a retired IDF combat soldier, with Bingo, a PTSD service dog who quickly became his lifeline. With Bingo by his side, Doron rebuilt his life — returning to work, reconnecting with others, and rediscovering joy.

PTSD recovery isn’t linear, and after the recent return of Israeli hostages from Gaza, Doron experienced a painful resurgence of symptoms that forced him to take leave from work. Through it all, Bingo never left his side. With his support, Doron began to feel safe again and found the courage to join a rehabilitation program and veterans’ support group.

For Doron, Bingo isn’t just a service dog — he’s a bridge back to hope, made possible through your caring support.

February is Jewish Disability Awareness, Acceptance, & Inclusion Month!

Did you know that Jewish tradition teaches Kol Yisrael arevim zeh bazeh — “All of Israel are responsible for one another”?

This JDAIM, let’s reflect: How can you help make our community more welcoming and accessible to everyone?

Today on International Holocaust Remembrance Day, we're sharing a brief story from Erez Barkai, Director of Community Relations at the Center in Israel.

Recently, a grandmother touring the Center, casually mentioned she was from Texas. That one word took me back 14 years—to Auschwitz, on the March of the Living. I was part of a delegation of six blind people & six Guide Dogs carrying a powerful message: during the Holocaust, blind people were murdered, and dogs were trained to kill. And there we stood—with dogs that guide, protect, and give life.

At the gates of Auschwitz, a Jewish man from Texas asked to take a photo with me and my guide dog. He told me he had survived that camp—and that on that exact spot, N***s had set dogs on him to kill him. He escaped. Now he wanted a photo with a dog from Israel.

A dog that helps, not one that kills.

When I shared the story the grandmother softly asked, “Was his name Max Glauben?” Yes. It was. She knew him well as a friend of her father.

The world is smaller than we think—or maybe Max's soul is still walking with us. May his memory and all those lost in the Holocaust be a blessing.

Why do our center pups sleep on fleece blankets?
Because even in the smallest details, we follow the most advanced research available.

A recently published comprehensive study from our friends at the Guide Dog Breeding School at the Israel Guide Dog Center for the Blind examined more than 5,000 dogs. The study found that puppies who spent their first weeks on a fleece surface, rather than newspaper or other smooth materials, experienced better pelvic health for years afterward.

The gentle grip provided by the fleece helps tiny legs gain stability, supporting healthier joint development from their very first steps.

At our center, nursing mothers and their puppies receive the highest standard of care. After the initial days on paper, we apply these research findings in practice so that every puppy receives the healthiest, highest-quality start possible.

We are committed to learning, improving, and doing better every day for our remarkable dogs.
