What happens after the volunteer puppy raisers have to bring their puppy back for training and to be matched? Aren't they sad?" This is a question we get all the time at the Israel Guide Dog Center. And the answer is yes, of course, but the journey doesn't end there!

Recently when the attacks from Iran started, one of our clients was having a particularly tough time. As a blind individual who recently received a Guide Dog and JUST moved into a new apartment in Tel Aviv, he had not yet had the chance to become acquainted with the building or the surrounding area. Between the frequent sirens and lack of familiarity with the area, something as routine as taking the dog outside to relieve itself suddenly became almost impossible.

Fortunately, he had maintained a warm relationship with his Guide Dog's volunteer puppy raisers. That day, the puppy raisers called our client to check in, given the sirens. When he shared the situation he was facing, they decided to come to him. Although they do not live very close, they left their home and drove to him, stopping 5 times along the way because of missile alerts. When they arrived, they helped him take the dog outside, assisted with grocery shopping, helped organize the new apartment, and stayed with him until the evening.

The following day, the family decided to travel to Eilat and stay for several days in order to be farther away from the threat. They invited our client and his Guide Dog to join them, and they all traveled together. During their stay there, the family made sure that both the client and the dog had everything they needed.

So, while it may be hard for our volunteers to return their puppies to the Center after a year together, these relationships and connections - and seeing the impact the dog has on their partner - mean the love and the care gets to continue on throughout the dog's entire life and beyond. These are friendships and bonds that truly last.

In the midst of war, an uplifting update from Erez Barkai, Director of Community Relations at the Israel Guide Dog Center, and his guide dog Venus:

“In our building, every siren sends us to the shelter under the apartment. A family with five young children lives above me. The youngest is a year and a half old. In the previous war he was still a baby, and now he walks around the shelter with his sweet little duck steps.

At first he and his siblings were a bit afraid of Venus, but with every siren he took a small step closer. Two days ago he finally reached out and petted her, and then his older brothers and sisters also felt brave enough to approach.

Yesterday, when a siren sounded during his nap, instead of waking up in fear and tears, he woke up excited and called ‘hav hav’ (puppy).

Venus had changed his experience of the sirens, bringing him comfort and joy, showing how a dog’s presence can make a real difference to the people around them.”

In Israel, even dogs feel stressed and under pressure with many sirens. Sometimes a simple caress helps the heart to calm down 💙 If your dog is stressed – speak in a calm voice, breathe slowly, and place a steady hand on your dog’s body. Your dog is learning from you that the situation is under control.

If you've met a dog in the shelter, and you want to pet it, give him space, don't be surprised by the touch, and if you're not sure - just ask.

A gentle connection can help everyone get through this together 🦮

Help us wish Beto a happy retirement!

Beto was born at Guide Dogs of America - Tender Loving Canines and at 4 months old made Aliyah to Israel to become a breeder dog for the Israel Guide Dog Center. Beto is a gentle and calm dog, who enjoys long walks, sniffing plants, belly rubs, and playing with dogs and humans.

Beto has sired 30 wonderful puppies from four beloved mothers Laika, Bella, Laura, and Martha.

With his retirement, we wish Beto a new and quiet chapter, full of travel, treats, and great love. Thank you Beto for an important and significant contribution to the future generations of our center dogs!
