Thank you to Correne Kristiansen, Advocacy Coordinator at the Bucks-Mont Collaborative, for taking the time before Thanksgiving to meet with NAMI to discuss legislative advocacy priorities for 2026. Collaboration is key to getting things done in local government to improve the lives of individuals and families impacted by the many challenges and barriers in the mental health system.

โ€œSometimes the most regulating moments are the ones that happen naturally during the week. A quiet sunrise, a song you love, a soft bed, a moment where you feel understood. When we slow down enough to notice them and sit in gratitude, our nervous system can actually absorb them. These small practices build resilience over time and help create a more balanced, grounded inner world.โ€

On Thursday morning, our executive director, Nick, shared information with officers participating in our CIT program on how local law enforcement agencies can partner with NAMI to provide resources and support. He also shared his story of recovery to provide hope and ensure that anyone who comes in contact with police during a mental health crisis as he once did receives help instead of handcuffs.

In 2008, with the support and encouragement of the Bucks County Commissioners, Bucks County, in collaboration with members of the Bucks County Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and other stakeholders, created a Task Force and embarked on the implementation of a Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) model for law enforcement departments.

The Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) is an innovative first-responder model of police-based crisis intervention with community, behavioral healthcare, and advocacy partnerships. The CIT model was first developed in Memphis some twenty years ago and has spread throughout the country.

CIT is a jail diversion program designed to improve the outcomes of police interactions with individuals whose behavior is influenced by mental illness, substance use, mental retardation, and related conditions. Officers learn to recognize psychiatric distress and other conditions and how to de-escalate a crisis - avoiding officer injuries, consumer deaths, and tragedy for the community. In addition, CIT officers learn how to link people with appropriate treatment, which has a positive impact on fostering recovery and reducing recidivism.

We are seeking assistance with locating a missing endangered person, 51 year old James Chappell. James is 6'0, and weighs approximately 200 pounds, and was last observed wearing dark grey/black sweatpants and a light grey hooded sweatshirt. James was last seen around 5:00 PM near Motel 6, Route 13 Bristol Township.

We are significantly concerned James is engaging in self-harming behavior and welcome any and all information to locate him and get him the help he needs.

Please call 911, if appropriate, and the non-emergency number, (215) 328-8501, otherwise.
