🌧 Rained-On Hay: Is It Still Good for Horses? 🐴

Lately, many horse owners and hay suppliers have been battling rain while making hay. Don’t be too quick to write off hay that was rained on in the field, dried, and then baled — it may still be suitable forage for horses.

The quality of rained-on hay depends on a few key factors. Forage quality tends to be greatest if:
✅ Rain fell soon after cutting, before much drying occurred;
✅ It was a single rain event, not prolonged or lasting several days;
✅ Rain was intense but short, rather than long and light; and
✅ The hay hasn’t been rewetted multiple times

Interestingly, rained-on hay often has reduced carbohydrate content and may be a safer choice for horses prone to laminitis or metabolic disorders.

As always, we recommend testing hay for its nutrient content, which can be especially helpful when determining the quality of rained-on hay. 🌾🔬

As much as I’m excited for my baby boy to be here in April, I can’t help but be excited for this year’s show season. I’ll be hauling Large Marge and my good friend Rebecca Rankila Warwas’s amazing gelding Chaplain this year! Also hoping to get prim in for training this year to finally get her going 🙂 2025 is going to be a busy year for me 🙈

Did you know…

An 1,100-pound horse needs to consume a 2-pound block each month just to meet minimum sodium requirements in moderate temps and in no work.

TWO POUNDS of a salt block every MONTH! For reference, the small rectangle salt blocks are 4lbs each.

Many horses are sodium deficient, which is concerning since sodium is important for nerve and muscle function as well as hydration.

Since blocks aren’t actually designed for a horse’s soft tongue and it’s hard to measure consumption, top dressing your horse’s feed with plain white loose salt at a rate of 1 tablespoon per 500lbs of body weight per day will help meet your horse’s daily sodium requirement.

Great information,

Compared to other animal species, the equine stomach is small occupying only 8% of the entire tract.

However the dog is 60% and the cow is 70%.

What does this mean?

That the horse's digestive system has evolved to ingest small amounts of food continuously. The dog, however, as originally a predatory animal, makes bulky and more punctual meals.

The cow is a herbivorous animal like the horse, but its stomach is compartmentalized to process rumen and its stomach works as if it were the horse's colon.

If you notice, the horse's large intestine has a great capacity, precisely to ferment all the fiber it ingests.

Small continuous servings instead of two or three copious. This latest form of feeding has been introduced to meet our needs, not those of equines.
