"Why do you say 'Autistic' instead of 'Person with Autism'?"

We get this question a lot! Historically, professionals used "Person-First Language" (Person with Autism) to separate the person from the diagnosis.

However, the majority of the Autistic community today prefers "Identity-First Language" (Autistic Person). Why? Because being Autistic is a core part of their identity, like being "American" or "Creative." It’s not a backpack you carry; it’s how you experience the world.

At Bloom and Thrive, we follow the lead of the community we serve.

We use big words like "PFA/SBT" (Practical Functional Assessment / Skill-Based Treatment), but here is what it actually means:

We create a context where your child is Happy, Relaxed, and Engaged (HRE). Only then do we teach complex skills.

We don't teach through tears. We teach through trust. That is the Hanley/SBT difference.

Did you know? The Kilmarnock Volunteer Fire Department is incredible. 🚒

Many rural stations offer "sensory visits" where your child can see the truck and meet a firefighter without the sirens blaring. This helps reduce fear in case of a real emergency.

We highly recommend stopping by to say hello!

Living in the country is beautiful, but for families with "runners" (elopers), the woods and ponds can be scary.

Safety is our #1 priority.

1. Work with us to teach "Wait" and "Come here" using fun games, not fear.
2. Consider wearable GPS devices.
3. Alert your local first responders (more on that tomorrow!).
