October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month
What is domestic violence?
Domestic violence is defined as a pattern of abusive behavior in any personal relationship that allows one partner to gain or maintain power and control over the other. This can include various forms of abuse such as physical, emotional, economic, and sexual violence, as well as intimidation and coercion.
Domestic violence is a major issue that affects millions of people in the United States and around the world. 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men are victims of some form of physical violence by an intimate partner within their lifetime. Approximately 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. And approximately 20,000 calls are placed to domestic violence hotlines nationwide on a typical day.
Victims of domestic violence often face severe physical and psychological consequences, including chronic health problems and disabilities.
The domestic violence statistics clearly show that abuse- whether it’s physical, emotional, sexual, or financial- happens far too often. Many survivors don’t even report what happened, which means the real numbers may be even higher!
Putting an end to domestic violence starts by believing in survivors, making sure they have safe places to go, and working together to create a safer future for all.
