In light of the ongoing government shutdown, we would like to provide important information about how this situation affects funeral services.
-Social Security is classified as mandatory spending, so we are continuing to file the required Form SSA-721, Statement of Death by Funeral Director. This action halts Social Security benefits upon death. While those receiving benefits will continue to do so, families should anticipate delays as some staff at Social Security offices across the U.S. may be furloughed.
-Veteran services are also impacted by the government shutdown. The National Archives office is currently closed, which means that if a family or local Veteran Service Agency does not have a copy of Form DD-214, Certificate of Discharge, the funeral home will be unable to obtain a copy. As a result, requests for military honors at the cemetery cannot be fulfilled.
-National Veteran Cemeteries are operating with minimal staff. Lawnmowing and maintenance are not currently being performed. While government headstones are still being produced and delivered, they will not be installed at graves until staff return to work. It is important to note that both full casket and cremated remains burials are taking place, but there may be delays in scheduling.
Additionally, those who are currently working at the cemeteries to perform these burials are not receiving pay. They are coming to work every day out of love and dedication to our deceased veterans. Please be kind to them....
