Eyelid twitching (aka myokymia) can be very annoying, and inconvenient. It can also seem scary when you have not experienced it before. Myokymia is an involuntary muscle contraction that can have many causes, ranging from excessive use of stimulants (such as coffee or alcohol), as well as fatigue, stress, or dehydration. Regardless of the cause, don't panic! The condition typically self-resolves.

If this condition does not improve, or the twitching is more of an involuntary forceful squeezing of the eyelids, you should be evaluated by your optometrist.

Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) tends to occur due to age-related damage to the macula. The macula is the area of the eye responsible for your central vision.

The risk of AMD increases for those 55 or older, those who have a family history of AMD, are of Caucasian ethnicity, and those who smoke.

The best way to monitor for this condition and these changes is to receive a comprehensive dilated eye exam. πŸ’œ
