Most dog owners have had the same quiet thought. When you look at your dog and say โI love you,โ do those words actually mean anything to them?
A small study discussed by Canine Cottages attempted to explore that question in a measurable way.
Researchers placed heart rate monitoring collars on four dogs and observed their interactions with their owners over the course of a week. During normal daily activity, the dogs maintained an average resting heart rate of about 67 beats per minute. It was steady and typical, reflecting a relaxed baseline.
Then the owners introduced something simple. They made direct eye contact and said the words, โI love you.โ
The response was striking.
On average, the dogsโ heart rates jumped to approximately 98 beats per minute. That increase of about 46 percent is commonly associated with excitement or emotional stimulation. Importantly, the dogs did not display behaviors linked to stress or fear. Their reaction appeared to be positive, not anxious.
The findings suggest that the combination of tone, attention, and focused connection may have triggered a surge of emotional arousal. Anyone who has seen their dog perk up at the sound of their voice or wag before a sentence is finished may not find this surprising. Dogs often seem to respond to more than commands. They respond to relationship.
Another part of the study revealed something equally meaningful.
When the dogs were cuddled, their heart rates dropped by roughly 23 percent, settling near 52 beats per minute. That kind of decrease typically reflects calmness and a feeling of safety. Hearing affectionate words may have sparked excitement, but physical closeness appeared to bring comfort and relaxation.
The contrast paints a fuller picture. Vocal affection may energize them, while touch reassures them.
Other research has shown that mutual eye contact between dogs and humans can increase oxytocin levels in both species. Oxytocin is often referred to as the bonding hormone because it strengthens trust and attachment. That may help explain why those quiet moments feel significant, even without shared language.
We may not always realize how central we are in our dogsโ lives. We step out for work, errands, and responsibilities, yet they greet us with enthusiasm that never seems to fade.
Perhaps they do not understand every word we say.
But they seem to understand the feeling behind it.
And sometimes, that is more than enough.
