People with hearing loss may experience frustration, stress and exhaustion when trying to communicate with others. When you are talking to someone with hearing loss, there are ways that your message can be better understood, making communicating much easier for everyone in the conversation.

Here are 7 communication tips when talking to someone with hearing loss:

1. Speak clearly and in a normal tone of voice.

2. Don’t shout. Shouting can make it harder for someone with hearing loss to understand.

3. Get the person’s attention before speaking.

4. Wait until you are in the same room to have a conversation and face the person when you speak.

5. Talk in quieter places.

6. Build breaks into your conversations.

7. Turn on captioning when watching TV or talking over video platforms such as Zoom.

Effective immediately, masks are required in all ENT & Allergy & Physicians Hearing Solutions offices. 😷

The flu is very prevalent at this time, and we will be monitoring the numbers closely to determine how long to maintain this policy.

Here are some tips to help avoid the flu, & reduce spreading it:

💉 Get your annual flu shot (recommended for everyone 6 months and older).
🧼 Wash hands often (or use hand sanitizer when soap and water are not available).
🤭 Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
🤧 Cover coughs and sneezes, and clean frequently touched surfaces.
💨 Improve airflow when possible (open windows, run HVAC fan, use air filtration).
🏠 Stay home when sick and wear a mask in public if you have symptoms or were recently exposed.

Tonight’s celebrations can get loud fast, so here’s your New Year’s Eve hearing reminder from your local hearing aid team!

Know the numbers:
85 dB (busy traffic, loud restaurant): safe for about 8 hours
100 dB (club music, very loud party): about 15 minutes
110 dB (some concerts, close fireworks): about 1 minute
120 dB+: can cause damage almost immediately

Here are some quick ways to protect your hearing tonight:
✅ Step back from speakers and fireworks
✅ Take “quiet breaks” indoors every 30 to 60 minutes
✅ Wear earplugs (especially for kids, their ears are more sensitive)
✅ If you wear hearing aids, consider a lower-volume or noise program, and use earplugs over your ears if you’ll be near loud sound
