The whistling or feedback noise coming from your hearing aid can happen for a few different reasons:

1️⃣ A blockage in your hearing aid.

If there is wax, debris, or another blockage in the device, sound may not travel through it properly. Instead, that sound can bounce back and create the whistling or squealing noise you hear. This is something your hearing professional should check, so be sure to give our office a call.

2️⃣ It may not be fitted to your ear properly or inserted correctly.

Another common cause of feedback is how the hearing aid is sitting in your ear. If it is even slightly out of place, sound can escape and re-enter the microphone, which causes that unwanted whistling sound.

3️⃣ Your hearing aid may need a professional cleaning or adjustment.

Over time, hearing aids can collect buildup and may need routine maintenance to keep working their best. A quick cleaning or fit adjustment can often make a big difference.

⚠️ If your hearing aid is making a whistling sound, do not ignore it. The sooner it is checked, the sooner you can get back to clear, comfortable hearing.

More than 1 billion young people (ages 12–35) are at risk of hearing loss from unsafe recreational listening.

Here’s the part most people miss: it’s not just volume, it’s volume + time. The World Health Organization gives this example:

80 dB = up to 40 hours/week, but 90 dB = only 4 hours/week.

Quick ways to protect your hearing:
• Keep your device at 60% volume or less
• Use noise-cancelling headphones so you do not crank it up
• Bring earplugs to concerts, bars, and sporting events
• Take breaks and step away from speakers
• Use sound-level monitoring features or apps

Today, March 3rd, we’re celebrating World Hearing Day. This year’s focus is “From communities to classrooms: hearing care for all children.”

Hearing plays a huge role in how kids learn, communicate, and connect. If you’ve noticed a child:

• asking “what?” often
• turning the TV up louder
• struggling to follow conversations in noisy places
• experiencing frequent ear infections or speech delays

it may be time for a hearing check.

Small steps make a big difference: keep headphone volume down, use hearing protection around loud noise, and don’t ignore ongoing ear symptoms.

People with hearing loss may experience frustration, stress and exhaustion when trying to communicate with others. When you are talking to someone with hearing loss, there are ways that your message can be better understood, making communicating much easier for everyone in the conversation.

Here are 7 communication tips when talking to someone with hearing loss:

1. Speak clearly and in a normal tone of voice.

2. Don’t shout. Shouting can make it harder for someone with hearing loss to understand.

3. Get the person’s attention before speaking.

4. Wait until you are in the same room to have a conversation and face the person when you speak.

5. Talk in quieter places.

6. Build breaks into your conversations.

7. Turn on captioning when watching TV or talking over video platforms such as Zoom.
