Informed patients are empowered patients. So, if you’ve been told you need ankle arthroscopy, make sure to ask the right questions.

Don’t know what to ask? This list can help: ⬇️

👉 Why ankle arthroscopy and not open surgery?
👉 What happens if I choose NOT to have the procedure?
👉 What’s the success rate?
👉 What are the risks and benefits?
👉 What’s the average recovery time for someone my age/with my condition?
👉 Will this eliminate my pain?
👉 How much pain should I expect afterward?
👉 How long does the actual procedure take?
👉 Will I be able to put weight on my ankle right away?
👉 Are there any red flags I should watch for post-op?

By asking the right questions, you walk into surgery with confidence that you’ve made the best decision about your care.

Welcome back to our Ask-the-Doc series—your go-to for answers about foot and ankle treatments!

Today’s topic: Cortisone shots. 💉👣

Q: How do cortisone shots work, and are they safe?
A: Cortisone shots, which contain a mixture of steroid medication and local anesthetic, work by reducing inflammation in the problem area in your foot.
When performed by a qualified provider, they are generally considered safe. Because the medication is injected directly into the painful area in your foot or ankle, the risk of systemic side effects is very low compared to oral corticosteroids. You will likely experience temporary pain, swelling, or bruising at the injection site, but serious complications are rare.

To ensure your safety, your foot doctor will likely limit the number of shots to two to three per year.

👉 If ongoing foot or ankle pain is limiting your daily activities, schedule an appointment with us to see if cortisone shots are the right option for you.

Good shoes = happy feet! Here are 5 tips for getting the right type of footwear:

1.) Know your foot type and what it needs: Stability helps flat feet, cushioning helps high arches, and balanced shoes help neutral feet.

2.) Timing matters: Shop for shoes in the evening, when your feet are at their largest.

3.) Prioritize comfort: Don’t rely on breaking shoes in; they should feel comfortable the moment you put them on. If the shoe hurts now, it won’t get better later.

4.) Choose shoes with a wide toe box: When shoes have more room for your toes to splay naturally, there is less pressure on them, reducing the risk of painful conditions like bunions and corns.

5.) Support matters: Wearing supportive shoes helps you avoid foot pain and injuries.

Footwear giving you lingering foot pain? Time to make a switch. If rest and changing your shoes don’t help, get it seen by one of our experts here at Foot & Ankle Institute of New England.

🔥 Burning pain in your foot slowing you down? Feeling a clicking sensation in your forefoot? 🦶 Morton’s neuroma could be the culprit. The good news: simple exercises may help ease the discomfort.

Here are 5 easy exercises to try:

1️⃣ Toe Spreads – Sit with your feet flat on the floor. Spread your toes apart as wide as you can, hold for 5 seconds, then relax. Repeat 10 times.

2️⃣ Marble Pickups – Place a handful of marbles on the floor. Use your toes to pick them up one by one and drop them into a cup.

3️⃣ Calf Stretches – Stand facing a wall with one foot behind the other. Keep your back knee straight, press your heel into the floor, and lean forward until you feel a stretch in your calf. Hold 20–30 seconds, repeat 3 times per leg.

4️⃣ Arch Rolls – Roll your foot over a tennis ball, lacrosse ball, or frozen water bottle for 1–2 minutes.

5️⃣ Towel Scrunches – Place a towel on the floor, lay your foot flat on it, and use your toes to pull the towel toward you. Repeat 10–15 times.

👉 If pain persists despite these exercises, don’t wait—schedule an appointment with the Foot & Ankle Institute of New England for a proper diagnosis and effective treatment.
