November 12 marks World Pneumonia Day. Globally, 2.18 million people died from lower respiratory tract infections, including pneumonia, in 2021. The majority of deaths were children under 5 years old and adults over 70 years. Pneumonia is a lung infection associated with inflammation and build-up of fluid. Many different bacteria, viruses, and fungi can cause pneumonia including mycoplasma pneumoniae, influenza, RSV, and COVID-19, and vaccination can prevent severe infection. Physicians and medical staff through GW Medical Faculty Associates offer pulmonology services to diagnose and treat pneumonia in addition to other respiratory diseases.
