Despite national clinical practice recommendations to periodically screen women and adolescent girls for anxiety and intimate partner violence (IPV), screening rates in primary care settings are low. The Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine recently published the article “Barriers and Facilitators to Screening for Anxiety and Intimate Partner Violence,” summarizing a study aimed at increasing awareness and adoption of screening for anxiety and for IPV in women and adolescent girls.

The article highlights the development of implementation resources – clinical workflow diagrams and resources guides – based on two of WPSI’s recommendations for Anxiety and Intimate Partner and Domestic Violence. The purpose of the resource guides and the accompanying clinical workflows are to facilitate screening for IPV and anxiety in clinical practice for women 13 years and older. The guides provide clinician resources to support screening and assessment, information on billing and coding, selected national and regional resources, considerations for implementation in clinical practices and health systems, and a resource index.

The WPSI’s updated recommendation on Screening for Cervical Cancer for average-risk women is available and approved by the Health Resources and Services Administration. The evidence-based recommendation discusses ages, frequency, and testing modalities for screening, including patient-collected hrHPV testing.

The new guideline also states that additional testing may be required to complete the screening process and follow-up findings on the initial screening. If additional testing (eg, cytology, biopsy, colposcopy, extended genotyping, dual stain) and pathologic evaluation are indicated, these services also are recommended to complete the screening process for malignancies.

Coverage for these additional services is required no later than January 1, 2027 for women with eligible health plans. Read the full recommendation including Implementation Considerations at the link in the bio.

A recent systematic review and meta-analysis of 42 randomized clinical trials with 39,111 participants, set out to determine the effectiveness and harms of patient navigation services for breast and cervical cancer screening. Among women who received patient navigation services, rates were 13.8% higher for breast cancer screening and 15.6% higher for cervical cancer screening, and higher for follow-up of abnormal screening results.

Reducing barriers with patient navigation services could improve access and engage patients in more effective and equitable cancer preventive care.

In partnership with the Health Resources and Services Administration, the WPSI launched its first online CME course, called The Women’s Preventive Services Initiative (WPSI): Recommendations for Women’s Preventive Health Care. This free course guides clinicians through the Women’s Preventive Services Guidelines to provide preventive services to women without cost sharing.

Utilization of these services such as breast cancer screening in women of average risk, contraception, and diabetes screening in and after pregnancy, among others, helps improve women’s health across their lifespan.

The WPSI recommends women at average risk for breast cancer initiate mammography screening no earlier than age 40 and no later than age 50, and screening should occur at least biennially and as frequently as annually. Women may require additional imaging to complete the screening process or to address findings on the initial screening mammography.
