Dee Sapp, the Executive Director for The SonRise Project, is also a devoted mother, fierce disability advocate, and living proof that you can champion someone else's greatness without losing your own. For decades, Dee has been on the front lines of raising her son, a Paralympic athlete who recently competed and won in Barcelona, Spain, representing Team USA.
Her son, who is autistic and has an intellectual disability, did not get there by accident. He got there because of a mother who refused to accept limitations, fought for inclusion at every turn, and built a support system rooted in love, advocacy, and an unshakeable belief in her son's potential.
But Dee's story is not only her son's story. It is also the story of a woman who learned — sometimes the hard way — that caregivers need care too. In this conversation, Dee brings her whole self: the pride, the exhaustion, the growth, and the hard-won wisdom that comes from raising a remarkable human being while still becoming one herself.
This conversation is for:
✅Parents and caregivers of children with disabilities
✅Anyone who has ever put themselves last
✅People who love someone on the spectrum and don't know how to cope
