BACB RBT changes are coming! Are you ready? 👀⬇️

The BACB recently announced new and upcoming changes for RBTs starting on January 1st, 2026. Dr. Shane Spiker discusses these upcoming changes for current RBTs (and new & renewing RBTs in 2026.

What can you expect in 2026?!
✔️ A new 3rd Edition Task List
✔️ RBT PDUs (Professional Development Units)

Beginning in 2026, once an RBT has passed their exam, RBTs (current RBTs, renewing RBTs, and new RBTs in 2026), you’ll have a 2-year cycle where you will be required to collect PDUs. PDUs are in-service trainings and must be approved by an ACE coordinator & meet certain standards. 12 PDUs will be required for their entire certification cycle (the 2-year period) in addition to regular supervision requirements for the RBT certification.

Let's breakdown the process of becoming RBT Certified:

1️⃣ RBT Course Approved by the BACB
2️⃣ Competency Assessment (tells the BACB you meet certain requirements and completed by a BCBA or BCaBA)
3️⃣ Attestation Form (signed by someone in your organization to attest you meet your background requirements)
4️⃣ RBT Exam

Prior to joining PBS, I gained valuable experience as a Kindergarten Paraprofessional and as a Youth Direct Support Professional in a group home for at-risk youth. These roles deepened my passion for supporting youth with diverse abilities, backgrounds, and experiences, providing a strong foundation for my work in ABA. From day one, my supervising BCBAs and the regional leadership team have been exceptionally supportive, easing my transition into this field and guiding my academic growth. Holiday cheer, without the ethical fear!

It’s that time of year when gift-giving is everywhere! As providers, it’s important to be sensitive to cultural norms in the communities you serve. Some families may place a strong emphasis on gifts as a sign of gratitude, and we want to ensure we respond appropriately.

According to the BACB Ethics Code (Standard 1.12), behavior analysts should not give or accept gifts from clients, stakeholders, supervisees, or trainees with a monetary value over $10 USD. Gifts are acceptable only if they are infrequent expressions of gratitude that do not result in financial benefit to the recipient. Letting families know this policy early in the professional relationship is a helpful antecedent strategy to prevent misunderstandings during the holidays.

This week's Ethics Tip is brought to you by Jenn Lenderman, BCBA and Senior Clinical Director. During conference season, behavior analytic professionals should be truthful (1.01) and professional (1.05) while attending sessions.

They should be mindful that we are all coming with different learning histories, competencies, and areas of expertise. Avoid disrespectful comments, aggressive debates, or dismissal of opposing views. Stay humble and professional, especially during controversial topics in the field.

Halloween is for treats (not stress!)

Trick-or-treating shouldn't be spooky for our friends and loved ones with special needs. Check out our tips to support your child through trick-or-treating this year.

Provide them with a visual to follow during the outing, and provide comfort (as needed) especially if Halloween is a new experience for them. Be sure to communicate with your child on how they are feeling and provide support to create both a comfortable and enjoyable experience for them.
