Studies have shown that people who survive breast cancer face a higher risk of cardiovascular conditions than those who have never had cancer. New research provides the first standard risk stratification that could help providers personalize breast cancer treatment while minimizing patients’ future cardiovascular risk. This publication, in JAMA Oncology, is just the beginning for the researchers from Georgetown’s Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, MedStar Health Research Institute, and Kaiser Permanente Southern California. Their next steps include validating this research in other health systems to ensure this model works for everyone. A new insight from researchers at Georgetown Lombardi helps outline a potential way to reverse the process and possibly improve outcomes in pancreatic cancer. They discovered that when pancreatic cancer cells send out tiny particles (packed with certain microRNA molecules), nearby immune cells are reprogrammed to help the tumor grow instead of engaging in their regular role of fighting the tumor. More research is needed before a new approach reaches patients, but the findings offer hope in improving outcomes in pancreatic cancer. The study appeared in the Nature journal Signal Transduction and Targeted Therapy.
