🌱 Some seasonal inspiration and insight I’ve been sharing with classes lately:

Waiting for Safety

furled,
a question mark
waving in the wind,
holding to the fetal curl
and the safety of the winter womb.

Nothing,
not the gentle
kiss of sun,
nor stream voice,
calling
can coax
that frond
to unfurl
one single moment
before it does.

A reminder that spring isn’t in a full sprint. She’s taking her time and unfurling as she’s ready.

What if we carved out some sacred time and space to remember our OWN natural pace—to listen to our ocean-wave like breath—and remember who we really are beneath the busyness.

What if we could let a little of the pressure go…and grant ourselves tender permission to stay furled and earthed a little more?

It feels like the world has already moved on…but I don’t want to yet! In working on a long overdue newsletter and reflecting on what’s helped me anchor in the chaos these past couple months, my first thought was the inspiration of the .usa monks.

I was fortunate to attend their closing lovingkindness or metta meditation at GW University with lovely fellow .yoga.fallschurch yogis. We’ve all practiced this meditation style many, many times before.

But we ALL remarked that this experience was SOOO different.

✨It was over an hour! With little verbal guidance. Longer than any of us had ever done this practice for by a longshot. It was hard at times (how challenging this must’ve been for newbies!!). But I kept thinking if they could walk 2,300 miles…. It was also very deep—alllll those souls sending silent wishes for peace into our city and world together!!

✨It was led by the remarkable Venerable Bhikkhu Paññākāra and infused with the powerful intentions of all the brave monks who’d just completed an impossible journey—one that reawakened thousands to the power of peace, possibility, and hope. What presence, power, and intention they brought that evening, when I’m sure they were sooooo ready for a bath and nap!

✨AND! What struck all of us in the group was the specificity and appropriateness of THIS particular lovingkindness phrasing they shared.

The wording I’ve encountered and taught most is simpler and easier to remember:

May I be safe.
May I be happy.
May I be healthy.
May I live with ease.

But it’s also more vague.

At this particular moment of such division, hatred, fear and wars of many kinds, we NEED respite from resentment and conflict in ourselves and our world.

And being happy is great…but freedom from mental and physical suffering is the foundation.

Our bodies AND our minds carry so much…and speaking wishes for peace directly to both of them… For me, it gets me thinking what that would actually feel and look like in my muscles, my thoughts.

I’m still processing it all…

Y’all, it has been a tough, LOOOOONG a&@ winter. I don’t feel like THIS yet! But I’m sloooooowly starting to come out of the worst of it, just like those brave daffodil buds peeking up between snow mounds.

I’m starting, again slooooowly, to remember what it feels like to delight…to laugh…to gather…to DANCE! And man, does it feel good and critical. Our bones KNOW it’s time for spring, for the light to replenish us again.

As part of MY remembering, I put a couple DANCE IT OUT dates on my roster, including:

🌊🌊🌊 I took the most beautiful vinyasa class this morning .yoga.fallschurch (no video as I was being present so this older solo shot will have to suffice!)… And for the first time in a long time, I was so struck by how the ocean of breath in the room carried and soothed me through the class.

Ujjayi breath—the soft yet deep “mirror-fogging” whispered breath—or even just getting quiet enough to actually HEAR our own breathing…

Well, it sounds like ocean waves.

My restorative yoga mentor often shares that this is NO mistake or coincidence.

It’s a reminder that…

🌊 We come from nature.
🌊 We ARE nature.
🌊 Of our NATURAL pace…beneath all the rushing and frenzy.

In a flow class, I LOVE slowing down and being present not only to my own nature-full breath, but to the breath of the community. The ocean in the room.

So thanks to those present with me this morning who helped me remember…

Literally and metaphorically applauding these brave monks’ remarkable 2,300-mile devotion to peace last night . What an honor to be there at the culmination of this incredible, impossible journey that had meant so much to so many and share our gratitude.

And to meditate deeply with THOUSANDS gathered in-person, and even more online, cultivating peace within self and for all living beings together.

I’ll share more thoughts soon on their unique lovingkindness or Metta meditation language, which our .yoga.fallschurch group felt was uniquely appropriate for this moment!

Soooo many emotions today with the juxtapositions of images and events we’re seeing in our nation, our area, in my own life even just this past week.

A few reflections here on the monks’ arrival, coming off hosting the MOST BEAUTIFUL Reiki 1 training .dmv this past weekend with such glimmery souls committed to cultivating and spreading more peace, coming off a REALLY tough few months personally.

You may or may not know that I’ve been away from teaching—and practicing—for a few weeks now amidst some capital “A” adulting and lifing.

Keeping those details close for now…

But I DO want to share transparently that although I believe in the PROFOUND power of a regular stress-reduction, centering practice…I believe just as strongly that our practice needs to evolve and meet us where we are, each moment and season.

And sometimes this means pausing our regular practice and just doing what we can to get through the day. Or that practice might literally just be 5 deep breaths deep down into your feet to remember that there still IS some steadiness beneath the chaos.

I don’t believe in a practice that forces…or one that always has to look the same or last a certain duration.

For me, practice is listening to self soooo deeply and tenderly. A whispered, “What do you need today?” (And “What’s NOT needed?”)

Lately, my days and my body haven’t allowed me to practice in the ways I usually do.

Instead, my practice has been showing up each day and holding what is here.

I know soon, I’ll return to more regular daily practice…and that it’ll feel good and right.

And for now, it’s OK that it is what it is. And I am what and how I am.

✨🙏🏽✨ My wish for YOU is a practice that sweetly bends and meets you where you are, today.

A practice that doesn’t judge or punish. That instead knows only gentle invitation, nourishment, encouragement and compassion.

That waits for you like that best friend you’ve known for forever. Always able to pick back up. Maybe in a new spot, with some new style, but always that same comfortable, come-as-you-are embrace.
