This Black History Month, we celebrate leaders who advanced our understanding of aging care, including Solomon Carter Fuller and Dr. Jacquelyne Johnson Jackson.

Solomon Carter Fuller (1872-1953) was a Liberian American neurologist, psychiatrist, pathologist and professor. He contributed important research into Alzheimer’s disease in the early 20th century, when the disease was poorly understood.

Dr. Jacquelyne Johnson Jackson (1932-2004) was a civil rights activist and pioneering researcher into aging among Black Americans. She drew attention to the lack of data and study of aging people of color and was among the first to recognize the intersection of racism, economics, and segregation in the Black aging experience.

These are enormously important advancements for our communities. We're grateful for our ancestors who helped to shape aging care as we know it and for the leaders who continue to carry that work forward.

Winter makes getting around even harder for many seniors. Icy sidewalks. Long bus waits. Limited transit options.

Seabury Connector provides door-to-door rides so older adults can shop for food, attend wellness programs, and stay connected.

One wellness center shared: “Having this opportunity makes a huge difference… especially now in the winter. Seniors get picked up, shop, and get home safely. It means a lot to us and to them.”

98% of older adults at our dining sites say they’ve learned something new about healthy eating — and that matters.

According to the National Institute on Aging, healthy eating is a cornerstone of healthy aging, helping older adults maintain energy, support chronic conditions, and make smart food choices as needs change.

Our programs make that easier:
- Nutritious meals across our dining sites
- Nutrition classes at our dining sites
- Seabury Connector grocery trips with a nutritionist offering tailored guidance

When people have the tools and information they need, they can take charge of their health with confidence.

A ride to a program. A shared meal. A familiar face at the table.

In our latest participant survey,
💬 97% reported increased social interactions
💙 95% reported feeling less lonely

These results far exceed our goal and show what we see every day: when older adults have support and community, they thrive.

For many of us, driving is tied to everyday freedom — a quick trip to the store, visiting friends, getting to appointments, or coming and going on our own schedule.

But as we age, changes in vision, mobility, or memory can make driving feel different than it used to. These shifts can be hard to notice, and even harder to talk about.

This webinar resource offers gentle, practical guidance on recognizing warning signs, understanding drivers’ rights, and having supportive conversations with loved ones about safety and independence.

If this is something your family is navigating, we hope it helps.

Recognize the common warning signs of unsafe driving for older adults, as well as the rights that drivers possess.

🏠 200 people supported with deeply affordable housing.
💞 60,000 hours of social support for isolated older adults.
🍴 More than 100,000 community meals served.
🌻 Care Management clients who received 3x (or more!) support than they could otherwise afford thanks to the Equity Fund.

We hosted a dynamic webinar in partnership with Positive Aging: “Managing the Crisis: How to Advocate for Yourself in a Medical Setting.”

A crisis isn’t just an emergency—it’s a turning point. It happens when what you’ve been doing isn’t working anymore, when needs become high (physically, emotionally, or logistically), and when safety becomes a concern.

Learn more about how to handle a medical crisis before, during, and after it happens by leveraging our Resource page: https://www.seaburyresources.org/how-to-be-an-effective-advocate-in-medical-settings

Caregiving doesn’t arrive neatly—or on our timeline. For Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde, it began with a single phone call that changed everything.

As her mother moved from fierce independence into a season of complex medical needs, Bishop Budde found herself navigating hospitals, rehabilitation, housing decisions, and the emotional weight of becoming a care partner—all while balancing her responsibilities as a spiritual leader and family member.

“I have a lot of empathy for families who are entering into care partnering,” she shares.

In our 2025 Impact Report, Bishop Budde reflects on how Seabury Care Management became a steady companion—offering guidance, advocacy, and reassurance when it mattered most.

As our Director of Care Management, Christine Bitzer, shared: “Our goal is to make sure no one has to do this alone.” Bishop Budde's story is one of the more than 150 families we serve each year and is a powerful reminder of why these supports matter.

Read Bishop Budde's full story in our 2025 Impact Report and learn why no one should have to navigate aging alone: seaburyresources.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Seabury-Impact-Report-2025-FINAL-Compressed.pdf

For many older adults, dependable transportation is the thread that holds everything together—access to fresh food, medical appointments, social activities, and the independence to manage life on their own terms. When that thread breaks, so does their connection to the world around them.

The Seabury Connector was created to prevent that. One Seabury Connector rider put it simply: “They help us with groceries and water… We always feel safe on the bus.” Our senior-focused transportation serves community dining programs, affordable housing communities, churches, and nonprofits across the region, making sure older adults can get where they need to go with ease and dignity.

Our drivers know the people they serve. They offer a steady hand when boarding, help carry groceries and cases of water, and make sure every rider feels seen, respected, and safe. And for riders like those at Edgewood, that support isn’t just convenient—it’s essential.

When an 82-year-old man recovering from a stroke had no immediate family or financial resources, our Care Manager guided him and advocated for quality care. We helped him access rehab, set up necessary legal documents, and ensured his safety at home.

Small but critical actions like these allow older adults to live safely, maintain dignity, and make informed decisions.
