NASTAD is proud to support the reintroduction of the PrEP Access and Coverage Act, legislation that would expand access to lifesaving HIV prevention medications and care.

Introduced by Senators Adam Schiff and Tina Smith and Representative Mark Takano, the bill would help remove barriers to HIV prevention by ensuring PrEP and related services are covered without out of pocket costs, prohibiting prior authorization requirements, and expanding access to prevention services for uninsured and underserved communities.

At a time when access to HIV prevention programs is under threat, policies that strengthen equitable access to prevention tools like PrEP and PEP are critical to ending the HIV epidemic.

NASTAD has signed onto a national statement of support for the 2026 immunization schedule from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).

Vaccines keep children healthy and thriving. AAP’s immunization recommendations are grounded in the latest scientific evidence and are designed to protect children and communities from serious diseases, including hepatitis B.

We remain concerned about efforts to weaken longstanding, evidence-based vaccine recommendations, including changes affecting universal pediatric hepatitis B vaccination.

Public health policy must be rooted in science, transparency, and the protection of children’s health.

NASTAD is proud to endorse a resolution introduced by Rep. Mark Pocan recognizing February 28 as HIV Is Not a Crime Awareness Day.

In 2026, it should not be a crime to live with HIV. Yet 32 states still have HIV-specific exposure or transmission laws, and 28 states impose enhanced criminal penalties based solely on a person’s HIV status, despite no evidence that these laws reduce HIV transmission or increase disclosure.

Criminalization undermines public health. These outdated and stigmatizing laws can deter individuals from seeking HIV testing, prevention, and treatment services due to fear of prosecution or discrimination.

This resolution is a call to action to:
• Repeal HIV criminalization laws
• Promote science-based HIV education
• Support increased funding for prevention, treatment, and care
• Reduce stigma and discrimination

Public health works best when policy reflects science - not fear.

🖤 Today is National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.

Black communities continue to experience a disproportionate impact of the HIV epidemic in the U.S. In 2023, Black people accounted for 38% of new HIV diagnoses, yet represented only 15% of PrEP users in 2024, highlighting ongoing gaps in access to prevention and care.

Addressing these inequities requires confronting stigma, strengthening access to prevention, and investing in Black communities. Check out this graphic and the entire AIDSVu National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day Toolkit for data, resources, and ways to take action:
