Substance use disorder impacts families from every socioeconomic status. Opioid use disorder conveys a higher risk than ever because fentanyl, a highly powerful opioid, and a synergistic substance called Xylazine. Learn how to reduce risk and consider sharing this information with those who may be at risk. Those who use opioids fir the first time and those who were abstinent and lapse are at not tolerant of the medication and are even higher risk.

A tranquilizer called xylazine is increasingly being found in the US illegal drug supply and linked to overdose deaths.1 Xylazine—which is not approved for use in people—can be life-threatening and is especially dangerous when combined with opioids like fentanyl.2
