Transitioning from indoor workouts to outdoor training?

Surfaces, elevation, and even footwear demands can change how your body loads. These differences are subtle but can contribute to overuse injuries if not accounted for.

Ease into outdoor sessions and pay attention to how your body responds.

**Testimonial Tuesday**

“He actually fixed a separate issue with my lower back literally by appraising my posture and checking a few alignment things, and then recommending some ways to fix it. He also enabled me to get back into barre classes by assessing my shoulder pain and determining whether it was weak vs. injured.”

Spring sports are starting up across the DC area. Whether it’s soccer, tennis, or rec leagues, sudden increases in cutting, sprinting, and direction changes can stress the body quickly.

If you haven’t done lateral strength or plyometric work recently, now is the time to build it in.

Preparation now helps prevent time off later.

Low back pain during lifting doesn’t always mean you need to stop.

Often, it’s a sign that load, positioning, or fatigue needs to be adjusted. With the right modifications, most people can continue training while addressing the underlying issue.

The goal isn’t to avoid loading. It’s to improve how your body handles it.

Meet the Team: Camille Boyle

We’re excited to welcome Camille Boyle, PT, DPT to Active Health Solutions.

Camille brings over a decade of experience working with orthopedic and active populations, with a focus on helping patients return to the activities they enjoy most.

She will also be helping us expand our reach in Northern Virginia, now serving patients further west across our service area. This means more athletes and active adults in those communities will have access to one-on-one, in-home physical therapy.

If you’re located in western Northern Virginia and have been looking for a more personalized approach to care, we’re now able to come to you.

With warmer weather in DC, a lot of runners are getting back outside. A quick reminder: your cardiovascular fitness often comes back faster than your tissues adapt.

That’s why early spring is when we see an increase in shin, knee, and Achilles issues. Gradual progression and strength work are key to staying consistent this season.

Meet Meredith Hermann.

Meredith is a pelvic health physical therapist who works with active individuals dealing with pelvic floor dysfunction, including pelvic pain, urinary symptoms, and core-related issues that can impact exercise and daily life. She also has experience treating orthopedic conditions, allowing her to connect full-body movement with pelvic floor function.

She works with patients across different stages, including pregnancy and postpartum, helping them safely return to running, lifting, and higher-level activity without symptoms holding them back.

Her approach focuses on understanding how the whole system works together—combining strength, mobility, breathing mechanics, and movement retraining to support long-term recovery and performance.

At Active Health Solutions, Meredith emphasizes individualized, one-on-one care to help patients not only feel better, but move better and stay active.

Temperatures in DC can still fluctuate quite a bit in April. A proper warm-up becomes even more important when training outdoors.

Before your workout, spend five minutes doing:
• light aerobic movement
• dynamic mobility
• a few strength activation exercises

A short warm-up prepares muscles and joints for the demands of training.

Many sports injuries don’t happen suddenly. They develop gradually over time.

Early signs to pay attention to include:
• discomfort that appears at the start of activity
• stiffness the morning after training
• pain that returns during similar workouts

Addressing these issues early often prevents longer interruptions to training.
