Meet Dr. Santiago Guaycochea, an internal medicine specialist and pain medicine expert from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Former President of the Argentine Association for the Study of Pain (2022–2024), he now serves as Scientific Secretary at and directs the Pain Cancer Center in Buenos Aires.

Beyond his leadership roles, Dr. Guaycochea travels with a team of physicians to some of the country’s most vulnerable areas, providing essential care to communities with limited access to healthcare. His mission: to meet urgent medical needs and improve health conditions for those who need it most.

Conoce al Dr. Santiago Guaycochea, especialista en medicina interna y experto en medicina del dolor de Buenos Aires, Argentina. Fue presidente de la Asociación Argentina para el Estudio del Dolor (2022–2024), actualmente es secretario científico en FEDELAT y dirige el Pain Cancer Center en Buenos Aires.

Más allá de sus roles de liderazgo, el Dr. Guaycochea viaja junto a un equipo de médicos a zonas vulnerables del país, brindando atención esencial a comunidades con acceso limitado a la salud. On Friday, 31 October, Jordi Miró (IASP Liaison to FEDELAT) and Javier Ubrí (IASP Manager of Global Programs and Communications) participated in the XXVI Argentine Pain Congress. The event offered a valuable opportunity to attend insightful sessions, engage with leading local experts, and explore the latest developments in pain research and treatment across the region.

Argentina holds a special place in IASP’s history, it was the organization’s first national chapter, established in 1974. Today, fifty-one years later, IASP continues to strengthen its collaboration with Latin American chapters, celebrating a shared legacy and building a more connected future for the global pain community.

El pasado viernes 31 de octubre, Jordi Miró (Enlace de IASP con FEDELAT) y Javier Ubrí (Responsable de Programas Globales y Comunicación de IASP) participaron en el XXVI Congreso Argentino de Dolor. Durante el evento, asistieron a interesantes ponencias, conectaron con destacados expertos locales y conocieron los últimos avances en investigación y tratamiento del dolor en la región.

Argentina tiene un lugar especial en la historia de IASP: fue el primer capítulo nacional, fundado en 1974. Hoy, cincuenta y un años después, IASP continúa fortaleciendo su colaboración con los capítulos latinoamericanos, celebrando una historia compartida y construyendo juntos un futuro más conectado para la comunidad global del dolor.

Our Story

The International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) is the world’s largest multidisciplinary organization focused on pain research and treatment. IASP membership is open to all professionals involved in the research, diagnosis, prevention, or treatment of pain in such disciplines as anesthesiology, physical therapy, alternative medicine, pediatrics, neuroscience, and psychology.

IASP has more than 90 national chapters and 7,000 members who live in 133 countries. Members may belong to one or more of 21 Special Interest Groups such as neuropathic pain, cancer pain, pain in childhood, and pain in older adults.

To educate and inform its members, IASP funds a variety of grants and fellowships and produces scientific and clinical publications, including the PAIN®, PAIN Reports®, and PAIN: Clinical Updates. IASP also publishes a membership newsletter, PAIN: E-Monthly, as well as books on various aspects of pain through IASP Press. IASP hosts the Pain Research Forum where members of the international pain research community engage in an open exchange of information and ideas, as well as RELIEF, a site where the public can learn about new developments in pain research. Every other year, IASP hosts the world’s largest pain-related meeting of scientists and clinicians, the World Congress on Pain.

IASP was officially incorporated in 1974 and recognized as an NGO by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1987.
