As part of its commitment to strengthening the healthcare sector and transferring the latest medical practices, the SAMS Institute is leading a specialized initiative under the supervision of Dr. Hazaim Alwair, Cardiac Surgeon, to advance skills in minimally invasive cardiac surgery, avoiding the need for a median sternotomy—one of the most advanced techniques in modern cardiac surgery.

This training program focuses on:

Providing specialized simulation devices for training cardiac surgery specialists

Supporting SAMS hospitals and centers with cardiac surgery–specific equipment and medical consumables

Enhancing the skills of medical professionals through structured cross-training programs

Exchanging expertise in minimally invasive cardiac surgery techniques

Improving the quality of healthcare services delivered to patients

This initiative represents a key step toward building specialized medical capacity and strengthening scientific collaboration, in line with SAMS’ mission to elevate standards of care and deliver safe, advanced cardiac services.

In a renewed effort to strengthen healthcare access in Syria, SAMS and the Union of Charitable Associations signed a partnership agreement to fully outfit and rehabilitate Al-Afiah Hospital in Damascus. Once completed, the facility will offer a broad range of specialized medical services and serve as a hub for advanced training in medical education.

The initiative is designed to expand high-quality care for communities across Syria at a time when reliable health services remain critically needed. During the signing ceremony, participating institutions emphasized the value of collaborative partnerships that put patients first and focus on building a stronger, more resilient healthcare system. This agreement marks a meaningful step toward improving care delivery and supporting the medical workforce that communities depend on.

The ceremony was attended by Dr. Mufaddal Hamadeh, Dr. Abdelfattah Elshaar, Chair of the Board, and Executive Director David Lillie.

As part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, our team in Syria hosted fun, interactive activities for children with disabilities—giving them a space to express themselves and feel heard. 🎨🎈

In “I Participate… My Voice Matters”, kids shared their thoughts through drawings that came together in a vibrant mural. In “Raise Your Voice”, colorful balloons carried messages about different types of violence—popped and read by the children with our team’s support.

These activities remind us: every child’s voice matters, and everyone deserves to be heard with dignity.

On the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, and as the concluding event of Autism Scientific Week at Damascus University, SAMS proudly celebrated the opening of the SAMS Autism Academy, the first center of its kind in Syria.

The idea began as a dream that has now transformed into a tangible reality, brought to life by a group of physicians, specialists, families of children with autism, and dedicated volunteers united by a shared mission: improving autism services in Syria.

The inauguration was attended by representatives from Damascus University, the Ministry of Higher Education, the Damascus Health Directorate, and the Rural Damascus Health Directorate, and was further honored by the presence of Dr. Wael Dagmash, Director of Damascus Health Directorate; Dr. Tawfiq Hasaba, Director of Rural Damascus Health Directorate; and Dr. Salahuddin Al-Khatib, Director of University Hospitals at the Ministry of Higher Education.

The academy operates under the supervision of Dr. Shaden Kassar, Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (ABA), and aims to train specialists in Applied Behavior Analysis and grant internationally recognized certifications.

This center represents a pioneering step toward enhancing autism services in Syria and creating a more supportive, inclusive environment for children and their families.

Special thanks to for joining us on this meaningful occasion.
