For the first time, Ghina hears the world around her. 💙

Eight-year-old Ghina received a cochlear implant in December 2025. In this powerful moment, a new world begins to open before her, one filled with sounds, words, and laughter she had never heard before.

But what moved us most happened before the surgery. When the doctor asked whether the operation should be for her or her younger brother Adnan, she answered without hesitation: “My brother.”
Adnan, 5, is still waiting for his turn. Because Ghina is the older sibling, the SAMS team performed her surgery first, with a promise that Adnan’s will follow soon.

At SAMS, we don’t just perform surgeries, we give children the chance to hear life for the first time.

Last night in Dallas, Texas, the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) community gathered for a Ramadan Iftar fundraising dinner attended by Dr. Aref rifai , President of SAMS, and Dr Abdul Fatah Elshaar , chairman of the Foundation , along with local physicians and community supporters.

The evening featured brief presentations on SAMS’ ongoing work medical work in Syria . A short reflection from Dr. Rifai - موعظة on the virtues of giving during Ramadan, where he spoke about the verse:

﴿ لِيُنفِقْ ذُو سَعَةٍ مِّن سَعَتِهِ ﴾
“Let the one who has abundance spend from his abundance.”

Dr Rifai gave different examples of charitable work : as the verse teaches that generosity is not measured by the size of the gift, but by sincerity and available capabilities .

The evening concluded with Tarawih prayers, and over $200,000 was raised to support chemotherapy treatments and cardiac interventional procedures for patients in Syria.

Surviving prison and torture is only the beginning of a long road to healing. Many in Syria still carry lasting physical and psychological scars, including severe deterioration in their oral health after years without even the most basic medical care.

Through our medical missions to Syria, volunteer dentists with SAMS are providing specialized dental and oral health care to patients in need, including survivors of detention. These teams treat advanced infections, gum disease, and tooth loss that have gone untreated for years. Each procedure is about more than relieving pain, it helps restore the ability to eat, speak, and smile with dignity again.

Alongside patient care, these missions are also investing in Syria’s future healthcare workforce. Volunteer specialists train young Syrian dentists, residents, and medical students through hands-on mentorship and shared surgical expertise, helping strengthen local capacity and ensure sustainable care for the years ahead.

This is the heart of SAMS’ mission: relieving pain, restoring dignity, and rebuilding hope one smile at a time. 🦷

During this month of Ramadan, you can help more patients receive the care they deserve and regain their dignity.

This Ramadan, every act of compassion can save a life 🌙

Last year, as hunger deepened across Gaza, SAMS responded to famine conditions by integrating nutrition screenings for children under three into its care.

Through this effort, 1,400 malnourished children received life-saving milk formula, restoring strength and hope in the face of hunger.
