As infection prevention professionals, we know that vaccine confidence matters. Misinformation has real consequences, such as resurgences of measles and other preventable diseases.

APIC calls for:
• Transparent, science-driven communication from public health authorities
• Continued advocacy for evidence-based vaccination messaging
• Support for clinicians, IPC teams and public health professionals in defending facts

Let’s stay vigilant, informed, and united in our mission to protect patients and communities.

11/19/2025

Ethiopia has confirmed an outbreak of Marburg virus disease (MVD), a severe viral hemorrhagic illness related to Ebola. Since November 12, 2025, this MVD outbreak has involved 9 cases and 3 deaths, currently centered in Jinka within the South Ethiopia Region bordering South Sudan. Although this is Ethiopia’s first MVD outbreak, the virus involved is consistent with strains previously seen in eastern Africa.

While the likelihood of MVD being imported to countries outside of Africa is low, sporadic international travel-related cases are possible, and such events are unpredictable. Given the seriousness of the disease, healthcare facilities should ensure they are prepared to rapidly recognize and isolate a suspected case. MVD preparedness includes having clear processes for screening individuals with relevant symptoms or exposure history, promptly initiating appropriate transmission-based precautions, and maintaining robust environmental disinfection practices. A list of MVD symptoms can be found here: https://www.cdc.gov/marburg/about/index.html.

Infection prevention teams are encouraged to establish or revisit their facility’s MVD readiness plans now.

The APIC Emerging Infectious Diseases Task Force has developed a detailed MVD Playbook to support this work, available here: https://apic.org/marburg/

Emerging Infectious Disease Task Force Update: Mpox

In October 2025, Southern California health officials reported three cases of the Mpox virus caused by the Clade I strain. These individuals reported no travel history to regions known for Clade I circulation, and no direct links have been established among the three cases.

The occurrence of these three unrelated cases raises concern for local transmission of this more severe form of mpox. Clade I is endemic to Central and Eastern Africa and historically caused more severe illness and higher mortality than Clade II. Meanwhile, Clade II, the strain responsible for the large 2022-2023 global outbreak, continues to circulate in the United States at low, stable levels.

Healthcare providers should remain vigilant when screening patients for mpox based on symptoms and travel history. Persons at risk of mpox should receive the Jynneos vaccine (if not already immunized), as current guidance supports vaccination to reduce the risk of severe diseases from both clades.

To support infection preventionists, APIC has updated and reformatted its Mpox Playbook to help IPs navigate mpox preparedness, response, and communication efforts with clarity and confidence.
