African Americans are part of a rich history in nursing and nursing education — but that history hasn't always been told.

In 1984, Dr. Mary Elizabeth Carnegie (1916-2008) set out to change this. Carnegie, a nurse educator and civil rights activist, wrote "The Path We Tread: Blacks in Nursing Worldwide," exploring the history of African American nurses from 1854 to 1984. Two subsequent editions extended the scope by a decade to include contributions from nurses in modern day wars and study nursing in Africa and the Caribbean region. In all three editions, Carnegie's research and scholarship brought to light people and stories that had previously been overlooked or unrecorded in history.

Carnegie made history, too: She established the first baccalaureate nursing program in Virginia at Hampton University, a historically Black college and university; she was named dean of the nursing school at Florida A&M, another HBCU; and she was the first Black nurse to serve on the board of a state nursing association. Throughout her career, Dr. Carnegie was a voice for diversity and inclusivity, speaking out against the status quo and fighting for integration in racially segregated nursing spaces.

In the preface to the book's second edition, published in 1990, Carnegie wrote: "The popularity of the first edition has convinced me that Black nurses take pride in their heritage and accomplishments and non-Black nurses have learned about the contributions of Black nurses to health care in this country." May we all continue to learn and take pride in the significance of Black nurses and nurse educators in the health and well-being of our society.

As the nation’s most trusted profession, the National League for Nursing stands with nursing’s leaders in opposition to the Department of Education’s recommendation to not classify graduate nursing as a professional degree. This action would deny nurses the opportunity to obtain higher graduate student loan amounts they may need to complete their education.

In Health Affairs Scholar, researchers from the University of Michigan reported last month that student debt is widespread among nurses. Nearly 30% of advanced practice nurses have debt exceeding $100,000, the new loan limit being proposed by the Department of Education.

✅ Be informed — Sign up for an information/public policy session Feb. 5 at 3 p.m. ET (registration link in comments).
