Detroit Mercy PA Program is the recipient of the 2025 Excellence in PA Education Award! Located in one of the nation’s most diverse cities, the program has built a student body that reflects the community it serves. 66% of students come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds and 48% of graduates go on to serve in medically underserved communities.

Detroit Mercy fosters a culture of educational excellence through initiatives like hosting youth exploration camps, offering students hands-on experiences in Health Professional Shortage areas across the state, and integrating DEI across the curriculum.

Under the leadership of faculty like Yolonda Freeman-Hildreth, PAEA/AAPA Research Fellow, Detroit Mercy is producing scholarship that challenges systemic barriers and improves recruitment and retention of underrepresented students across the profession. Congratulations to the Detroit Mercy PA Program for setting a powerful standard in PA education!

The U.S. Department of Education has formally released a proposed rule following the RISE negotiated rulemaking sessions that would significantly restrict access to federal student loans for PA students and other licensed, graduate-level health professions students. This proposal implements provisions of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) establishing new borrowing limits for graduate and professional students, with significant restrictions beyond the criteria Congress required for professional student status.

The Department is now accepting public comments, and this is a critical moment for PA educators, students, and clinical partners to raise their voices.

The 2025 Clinical Education Award winner is Jennifer Guthrie, MPAS, PA-C, director of experiential education and associate professor at Butler University. For over a decade, she has consistently gone above and beyond to support students, preceptors, and the healthcare community.

Betsy Schmidt, DMS, PA-C, program director and department chair, commented, “She has created a clinical education program that not only meets standards but consistently exceeds them, leaving a lasting positive impact on students, preceptors, and the PA profession.”

Guthrie has not only sustained but expanded Butler’s network of clinical sites during a time when clinical placements are increasingly competitive. Her talent for building lasting partnerships has been instrumental to the program’s success. She has also developed robust training resources for preceptors and led impactful recognition events. Congratulations!

In this episode, Michael Roscoe, PhD, PA-C, PAEA president, sits down with Tyler Smith, MPH, chief policy officer at PAEA, to unpack recent changes in federal student loan policy and what they could mean for PA education. The conversation focuses on the One Big Beautiful Bill Act and its introduction of new loan limits that differentiate between graduate and professional students—a shift that could significantly affect PA students’ access to financial aid.

Smith outlines PAEA’s federal advocacy efforts, explains why coordinated national advocacy matters, and walks listeners through the Department of Education’s ongoing rulemaking process. The episode underscores a critical takeaway: public engagement matters. With a forthcoming comment period on the proposed regulations, the discussion highlights why input from educators, students, and stakeholders is essential to shaping the final outcome.
